LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN Community Day scheduled for May 5

Lower Macungie Community Center will hold the fifth annual Community Day 4 to 8 p.m. May 5. Smokey Bear and other characters will be there to welcome residents. There will also be face painting, a moon bounce, the Lower Macungie Clown Club, a petting zoo, photo booth and light refreshments. There will also be representatives from many township clubs and organizations including Lower Macungie Fire Department, Wildlands Conservancy, Macungie Ambulance, Lehigh Valley Health Network MedEvac, Lower Macungie Youth Association, Lehigh Valley Bee Keepers Association and Lehigh Valley Health Network.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. May 6 to discuss "Cover Her Face" by P.D. James at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center. The book for June 3 will be "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown.

The library will celebrate National Library Week April 12 through 18.

The library will continue its financial planning series with a presentation on Social Security 6 p.m. April 21. Representatives from QNB Bank will cover this topic which will be followed by a question and answer session.

The library will host a program on covered bridges during "See Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges Week" 6 p.m. May 13. Ray Finkelstein of the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society will discuss the history of these local landmarks. Registration for the program is requested.

The next Friends of the Library meeting will be 10 a.m. April 18. Set up for the spring book sale will start 8 a.m. April 27. Lunch will be served. Signup sheets to volunteer at the book sale are at the library. Book donations are not being accepted at this time.

The spring book sale will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 1 and 2 in the library. There will be an extra sale day this year: 4 to 7 p.m. May 4. The bag sale will be held 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 5. Member preview night will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. April 30. Membership forms are available at the door. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the library.

Concordia Lutheran Preschool will host a spring cleaning clothing drive fundraiser and Earth Day event 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 18 at Concordia Lutheran Church on Brookside Road. Acceptable items for the clothing drive include new and gently used clothing, shoes, coats, bedding, towels and stuffed animals. Tax donation receipts are available. There will be family friendly Earth Day activities 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as well as food and a bake sale. For more information, call the church at 610-965-3265.

The Lower Macungie FireFighters Women's Association will host a Vera Bradley Bingo 1 p.m. April 19 at the Lower Macungie Fire Department on Brookside Road. There will be a Chinese Auction, raffle and refreshments. Doors open noon. For more information, call 484-239-3945.

The Nutrition Group, East Penn's food service provider, will present a Nutrition, Health and Safety Fair 9 a.m, to 1:45 p.m. April 25 at Lower Macungie Middle School. There will be information on nutrition and healthy snacks as well as health screenings and free food samples.

Friends of the Emmaus Public Library will host the 17th annual used book sale 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. April 25 at the Lower Macungie Middle School cafeteria in conjunction with the Nutrition Fair. A brown bag blowout will be 3 p.m. There will be a book sale preview night for Friends members 7 to 9 p.m. April 24. Memberships are available at the door.

The Lower Macungie "Lazers" Swim Team Signups will be 5 to 7 p.m. April 28 at the community center.

There will be a free document shredding event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 25 at the Lower Macungie Township Municipal Building parking lot. The public is invited to shred up to four boxes of documents per household. The event is sponsored by State Representative Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, and Lower Macungie Township.

Lower Macungie Pool swim lesson signups will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the community center.

The Alburtis Lions Club and Zion Lehigh Lutheran Church will hold a Mother's Day Ham Dinner 4 to 7 p.m. May 9 at Zion Lehigh Lutheran Church on Spring Creek Road. For more information, call Jane at 610-336-9863.

Summer playground signups will take place 6 to 8 p.m. May 21 at the community center. The program runs June 29 to Aug. 14.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon April 21 and May 5 and 19 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

AARP will offer a session of Safe Driving for Mature Drivers 5 to 9 p.m. April 23 and 30.

The community center offers a number of activities. Upcoming classes include CPR classes May 26 and 28 and SAT practice test on May 16.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site winter hours will be noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are closed Tuesday and Thursday. Beginning May 1 the hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
