Bauer takes on new challenge
A year after earning three gold medals at districts, while also serving as one of the area's top runners in the 200-meter dash, junior Lindsay Bauer challenged herself with a new event this season.
Bauer, who excelled in both her jumping events (long jump and triple jump) and sprinting events a year ago, has perhaps found the perfect combination of those skills in one event. And in her first attempt in the 300-meter hurdles, the junior set the bar high once again for the rest of the Lehigh Valley.
In last week's tri-meet with Northwestern and Palisades, Bauer took first place in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.06. Bauer edged out Northwestern senior Alexis Gawelko, last year's Colonial League champion and seventh-place finisher at Class AAA districts.
"I think I did really, really well," Bauer said. "I was really excited about the race because I sprint and I jump, and if you put that together, I figured you have a hurdler.
"I was really happy with my time, [but] I know that I can be so much lower than that because it was raining, it was cold, and it was windy."
Bauer will likely replace the 300-meter hurdles with the 200-meter dash she ran a year ago.
It's not that Bauer didn't have success in the 200 meter dash. As a sophomore, she took third place at the Colonial League Track and Field Championships and finished second in the preliminary round at districts.
But Bauer is itching for a new challenge, as well as the opportunity to capture four district gold medals in the same season. The 300 meter hurdles provided her with the best opportunity at achieving that goal.
"I'm always up for a new challenge," Bauer said. "I won the long , triple and 400 [meter dash], and I was looking for a fourth event that I could be the best at. The 200 is pretty competitive. I'm up there in the top three, but I figured I have a better shot in the hurdles because I'm fast and I can jump."
Her time of 47.06 is already better than Gawelko's league championship time of 48.08 a year ago.
"It's just something new," Bauer said. "It's really exciting for me to see what I can do."
Due to weather conditions during last Tuesday's meet at Salisbury High School, Bauer wasn't able to compete in either of her jumping events. The girls triple jump and long jump were two of four jumping events cancelled last week. Both boys and girls discus and pole vault events were also postponed.
The makeup date for the remainder of those events was scheduled for Monday.
The Falcons travel to Bangor on Thursday for a tri meet with Northern Lehigh at 4 p.m.
