LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Macungie Borough

Macungie Borough held a presentation about rain barrels recently.

The rain barrel is a rainwater collection system used to store roof runoff for irrigating gardens and lawns as well as car and pet washing.

It is also a method for water conservation and a source of savings for the consumer.

Stormwater runoff is one of the major sources of pollution. Another problem is with the sewer system. Rain water overwhelms the system and adds to the overload of the system.

Macungie officials were hoping for 20 attendees but more than 60 residents attended.

Residents were given rain barrels which were donated by Coca Cola. The various supplies were also provided to the residents.

Also contributing to the presentation and the rain barrel project are the boroughs of Macungie and Alburtis. Barry Isett & Associates, Lehigh County Authority and Kalmbach Park are also major contributors with volunteers spending many hours getting this project started. There is a painting contest in Macungie for the rain barrels. Painting the barrels keeps algae at bay.

Using the water is important to help keep mosquitoes from congregatng. There are tablets to dissolve in the collected water to curtail mosquito activity.

There will be rain barrel painting demonstrations at the Macungie Farmers Market.
