Falcons play in Via All-Star Games
Before the high school basketball seniors hung up their sneakers, whether it was for good or until a collegiate career gets underway, there was one final game to be played.
For four Salisbury seniors, they had that opportunity over the weekend at the 40th Annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic.
In the first game of the day at Northampton Community College's Spartan Center Gymnasium, Meghan Eripret and Kelly Gonoude suited up for the South all-stars in their 81-79 win over the North. Eripret scored six points for the South, while Gonoude added four.
"It meant a lot to have one last game in the Salisbury jersey, and with Kelly [Gonoude] especially," Eripret said. "It means a lot because not everyone gets to be a part of this. I think it was a great honor. I'm happy with the ending of this one."
Eripret was named to the Via Team of the Year.
After the South built a quick 15-5 lead and held a 46-32 advantage at halftime, the North all-stars began their comeback behind Pocono Mountain West's Jackie Benitez.
Benitez scored 20 of her game-high 31 points in the second half to bring the South back to within six points in the second half. The North cut that lead to two in the final seconds, but critical free throws in the final seconds secured the South's victory.
Bethlehem Catholic's Kalista Walters scored a team-high 25 points for the South. For Eripret, the top post player in the Colonial League, it was the first time she had the opportunity to play with Walters, the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference's MVP.
"I played against some of these girls for AAU, so I kind of knew them," Eripret said. "But I think playing with them all, especially Kalista who I've never played with or against, was really a great experience."
Winning wasn't the most importance aspect on Saturday. Instead, the matchup between the area's best all-stars provided a chance for some of the top Colonial League and EPC players to team up against all-stars from the North.
Eripret is the only one of the four Falcons committed to play basketball at the collegiate level. Before she begins her career at Lehigh University, she will focus the next couple of months on the track and field season.
"This is my first year without AAU, so that's definitely been different," Eripret said. "Normally I would have been halfway thru my AAU season by now. I think it's a nice change of pace, but pretty soon I'll be right back at it."
In the second game of Via's "Super Saturday," the North all-star boys downed the South team 105-82 behind 21 points from Stroudsburg's Dan Cuevas.
Brendan Reichenbach scored four for the South all-stars, and Dasheen Reid was also named to the team, but could not participate due to injury.
There was more than just a foursome of basketball games to commemorate the Via of the Lehigh Valley events at Northampton Community College.
A week before to the games, the college held a clinic for athletes with special needs. The Via all-stars played a key role in helping with that clinic; they also had the opportunity to attend the Via All-Star Banquet last Wednesday at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center.
The East girls outlasted the West in the third game, 83-70, before the East boys all-stars secured an 87-84 win over the West to cap the slate of games.
