SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

At the March 18 monthly board meeting, Salisbury Township School district approved full-day kindergarten at both elementary schools beginning with the 2015-2016 school term. Administration will seek approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the proposed alteration in educational programming.

The estimated cost to add full day kindergarten is $191,000 and includes two full-time teachers.

The vote was unanimous with directors Dr. Chris Spedaliere and Samuel DeFrank not in attendance.

School board president Russell Giordano advised residents, "Get your children registered to be a part of this fabulous school district."

The board also approved the transfer of PlanCon funds in the amount of $20,000 from the general fund to the capital improvement fund for the purchase of athletic equipment for the high school weight and fitness rooms.

Also approved was the award of contracts for building work to be completed this summer in-cluding the roof replacement at Harry S Truman Elementary School to Alan Kunsman Roofing and Siding, Inc., the administration building back-up generator to Diefenderfer Electrical Contractors, the student locker replacement at Salisbury Middle School to Bracy Contracting Inc., the student toilet room renovations at HST and SMS to CMG of Easton, Inc., doors, hardware and keying replacement at SMS, HST, Western Salisbury Elementary School and the administration building to Bracy Contracting Inc. and the floor replacement at WSE to Yorie Tile.

In personnel news, Melissa Holland was approved as a part-time learning support instructional assistant at WSE. SMS teacher Allison Gerhart was approved for a FMLA leave tentatively May 4, Salisbury School Secretary Kimberlee Pavkovic was approved for a FMLA leave effective Feb. 25, HST and WSE teacher Robert Ludwig was approved for a FMLA leave effective Jan. 19, WSE teacher Patricia Anderson was approved for a FMLA leave effective Feb. 5 and SMS teacher Suzanne VanEmburgh was approved for an FMLA leave effective Jan. 19.

Mark Allison was approved as the assistant middle school soccer coach, James Dylan Bonge was approved as the assistant varsity track coach-pole vault, Douglas Theye-Ace was approved as the assistant varsity track coach, Michael Garrigan was approved as a volunteer assistant varsity softball coach and a volunteer assistant middle school softball coach, Brian Bleam was approved as a volunteer assistant boys tennis coach, Timothy Zaborowski was approved as a volunteer assistant boys tennis coach, Louis Bottitta was approved as a volunteer assistant boys tennis coach, John Gilligan was approved as a volunteer assistant softball coach, Michael Silberman was approved as a volunteer assistant softball coach and Jeffrey Breidinger Jr. changed from the assistant varsity track coach to a volunteer assistant track coach.

Muhlenberg College student teacher Dayna Kline was approved to work with HST teacher Lori Fortunato March 16 through May 6.

Cedar Crest College student teacher Jennifer Wendel was approved to work with SMS teacher Margaret School March 16 through May 1.

Board member Mary Ziegler reported 197 students were serviced by the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit in February and 204 students were being serviced in March.

SHS Principal Heather Morningstar commended Director Will Erwin, students and staff for their work on the high school production of "Pippin." Morningstar said despite the weather delays, Erwin never complained and provided a quality production.

Morningstar said SHS will host a Salisbury Student Film Festival in May. Three businesses have agreed to sponsor the event including PBS 39, RCN and Dan's Camera City.

The competition will be open to neighboring school districts.

The next curriculum meeting will be 7 p.m. March 30 at WSE.

The next operations committee meeting, with more discussion on the budget, will be held 7 p.m. April 8 at the administration building.

The board will meet for their scheduled monthly meeting 7:30 p.m. April 15 at the administration building.
