LOWER MACUNGIE MIDDLE SCHOOL
About 120 Lower Macungie Middle School Theatre students have be working hard getting ready to entertain audiences with singing and dancing in their upcoming Spring Musical production of "Crazy for You" being held 7 p.m. March 26 and 27 and 2 and 7 p.m. March 28.
This fun musical comedy is a Gershwin extravaganza filled with song, hilarious dialogue and high energy dancing. It follows the adventures of a boy whose mother, a member of a rich banking family, wants him to become a banker but he aspires to be a performer on Broadway. She sends him to foreclose on an old run-down theatre in a small western town in Nevada where the fun and adventures begin including confusing love and mistaken identities.
Eighth grader Dariel Martinez has the dual role of Custus and Mingo. Custus is his favorite role because he likes the character and says it's a fun part to play.
"Custus likes the show but doesn't think it will go far so he doesn't know what to think," Martinez said. "Sometimes he gets all excited for a part and he starts singing with his friends. Mingo, he's over excited all the time and just enjoys being with everyone, loves everyone."
Martinez has been involved in LMMS theatre since sixth grade. He was inspired by his older brother who was also involved in theatre. Martinez loved the experience and hopes to continue next year in the high school. Martinez's mother has helped LMMS theatre with costumes.
Martinez described "Crazy for You" by saying "it is more countryside with accents and lots of dancing, the singing is pretty easy so you can let go and have fun."
Martinez said everyone is excited and hyped up for the show which he thinks is going very well.
"The last number will make you not want to go to intermission, just keep going on with the play," Martinez said.
Danielle Kleinberg, also in eighth grade, describes her role of the character Patsy as a "dumb blonde." Patsy is one of Follies' girls who is outgoing with sparkly dresses and feathers.
"I think it's just a crazy love story that is so cool to see, exciting and upbeat, there's no reason you wouldn't want to watch it," Kleinberg said. Kleinberg said she can relate to Patsy. When she found out she got the part she was excited and started dancing around because it was really exciting. Kleinberg said being in theatre has taught her how to express herself, become more outgoing and to try new things. Her interest in theatre came from her brother's friends telling her it was a fun experience. Once involved, she really enjoyed it. She thinks the musical "will definitely make the audience laugh and have a great time. It's a family show, it will definitely make you happy and in a great mood."
For any students considering theatre, Kleinberg says "definitely give it a try, it's good to try new things."
Nicholas Toto is a stage manager for the production; it's his job to make sure all the technical operations go smoothly. Something he's always wanted to do; he works with the lights, sound and spotlights and supervises others in that aspect of the play. He hopes to continue in this part of theatre in the high school and possibly later on Broadway. He hopes the audience just comes and has a good time.
Stage manager Katy Fogash is in charge of the crew backstage; she supervises the crew with sets, set moving, curtains and helping the cast. Fogash became interested in theatre after being influenced by her mom, who was in theatre in high school, and a neighbor who was stage manager when Fogash was in sixth grade. She has been involved in several shows as costume crew and stage manager.
With stage managing "you get to be there through the whole thing and watch it grow. It's really nice seeing that," Fogash said, adding she likes being behind the scenes. She hopes the audiences "come and have a good time because even though it's a musical it has some really funny parts in it and a great storyline."
Fogash has very fond memories of all six shows she has been involved in and said "each one is special in its own way."
Patrick Campbell directs the LMMS Theatre plays and likes to change it up with performances. He said he chose this particular musical because it's jazzy and fun.
