Falcon girls track returns 'everyone'

Following a season in which the Salisbury girls track and field team finished 6-5 in the Colonial League and the boys went 3-8, the Falcons return a good chunk of the puzzle from those teams.

The girls team, which returns three state medalists from last year, figures to be one of the top league representatives in 2015.

Lindsay Bauer, a junior that earned three District 11 Class AA gold medals (400-meter dash, long jump and triple jump) and two top-five state medals, was one of the Lady Falcons' top point scorers. Senior Katie Toman (first at districts and second at states in the pole vault) and senior Holly Szita (a district runner-up in the high jump) are looking to replicate similar successful seasons.

Besides those three, senior Kelly Gonoude (third at districts in 1600-meter run), senior Maddy Undercuffler (third at districts in discus), senior Meagan Eripret (third in district shot put) and junior Isabelle Bubenko (fourth in district shot put) also placed in the top five a year ago.

"We pretty much bring everyone back on the girls' side," head coach Doug Hensinger said. "I think they're going to be strong this year."

Other than the distance running events, depth is a luxury on the girls' side in a number of different events.

"The only thing we don't have is depth for our distance girls," Hensinger said. "We have depth throughout all of the other events."

A year after placing first at districts in the 400 meter dash, Bauer is taking on a new event as this season gets underway. She now has her eyes set on the 300-meter hurdles, and Hensinger believes she will thrive in that discipline.

"That will be a real good event for her," Hensinger said. "I think she can do well at anything she tries. She is a good athlete."

Senior Jenna Keet is a newcomer to the team after playing softball in previous years.

Austin Uhl, a silver medalist at the 2014 PIAA Track and Field Championships in the long jump, is the biggest graduate on the boys' side. Uhl, who also finished fifth in the high jump and seventh in the triple jump at districts, leaves a void for the Falcons in a number of jumping events.

But other than Uhl, Corey Meikrantz (fourth in district shot put), Levi Renninger (seventh in district pole vault) and Ian Carey (a ninth-place finisher at districts in the 3200 meter run), the Falcons return a number of upperclassmen that experienced plenty of success a year ago, beginning with distance runner Kyle Gonoude. Patrick Golden and Sinjon Bartel also graduated from a year ago.

Gonoude, a senior, returns for his final season on the track after taking first at districts in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. He took third at states in the 1600 as well.

"We have a lot of boys for distance events," Hensinger said. "They are good kids, and they work hard."

Junior Tevon Weber (second in javelin at districts) and senior Bryce Fairclough (fourth in long jump, fifth in triple jump at districts) took top-five places a season ago.

Both of those athletes return in 2015, as does senior Greg Fry (an eighth-place finisher in district 3200 meter run). Newcomer Joseph Fainor will run in the distance events.

"In cross country, he [Fainor] really excelled," Hensinger said. "He did a lot better. We'll see what happens with him during track."

The Falcons are also dealing with the task of replacing their throwing coach from a year ago. Salisbury has a new pole vault coach and jumping coach, too, making the offseason a bit more of a challenge to go with the harsh weather in recent weeks.

Hensinger isn't big on setting particular goals before the season, but he is adamant about seeing each and every one of his athletes produce to the best of their abilities.

"I don't set goals ahead of time," Hensinger said. "I want them to do the best they can, and the rest will take care of itself. They compete. If they work hard in practice, that will translate to the meets."

Salisbury's first meet was scheduled for Tuesday, but postponed to a later date. The Falcons' tri meet at Saucon Valley with Notre Dame (Green Pond) is scheduled for Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
