EMMAUS COLUMN Day clean-up event April 18
The Emmaus and Upper Milford Township Joint Environmental Advisory Council will host its Earth Day clean-up event April 18. Groups should meet at Emmaus Community Park 8:30 a.m. for coffee and to get organized. After the clean up, groups are invited to return to the park for snacks and educational community fun. Trout season opens 8 a.m. April 4. The Cedarbrook Sportsmen Club stocked Furnace Dam with trout for opening day. Stop by and share in the excitement of the catch.
The Friends of the Emmaus Library will hold its annual book sale April 25 in the cafeteria of Lower Macungie Middle School, 6229 Lower Macungie Road. The book sale runs 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Brown Bag Blow-out is 3 to 3:45 p.m.
The Nutrition, Health & Safety Fair, organized by the Nutrition Group, food service provider for the East Penn School District, will offer free food samples, free blood pressure screenings, health information and demonstrations. The Nutrition Fair runs 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

The Emmaus Kiwanis Club will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Emmaus Community Park, 13th and Broad streets, April 4. The hunt begins promptly 1 p.m. so plan to be there early because the hunt lasts only a few minutes.
The club will also host the Walter C. Stoudt Memorial Prayer Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. April 3 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. Seating is limited. Call 610-395-4818 for information and tickets.
The Emmaus Garden Club meets April 7 at Faith Presbyterian Church, North Second and Cherokee streets. The meeting begins with a social time at noon, program 12:30 p.m. and business meeting immediately following the program. The program will be "Lessons Learned at the Lavender-Farmette" by local lavender expert Florence Rodale. She will present an update on her Mediterranean-style crop following last winter's deep freeze and will bring her fragrant artisanal lavender products for sale. For information, call 610-392-1405.
The deadline for ordering a brick at the Remembrance Garden for the May 24 Veterans Day Memorial Day Brick Installation is April 4. Order forms are available from www.emmausremembers.org.
The deadline for artists to submit an application for the Emmaus Arts Commission's Rain Barrel project is April 6. Interested artists should submit a short summary and sketch of their intended rain barrel design. Applications are available at www.emmausarts.org and Emmaus Borough Hall. The completed rain barrels will be auctioned off with proceeds from the auction going to the Emmaus Arts Commission to be used to fund future EAC programs and events.
The Shelter House Society will hold its annual Patriot's Day dinner April 25 at Emmaus Citizens Fire Co. # 2, Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th Street. The evening begins with opening remarks 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner. The program features Krista Pegnetter, the new director of the Emmaus Public Library, who will present the history of the Emmaus Library and plans for its 75th anniversary celebration. Senior citizens over the age of 55 are invited to the Emmaus Senior Citizens' meetings at St. Matthew's E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The group meets Fridays 1 p.m. There will be no meeting April 3 because of the Good Friday holiday. Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. April 6 and 20 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. The offices will be closed April 3 for the Good Friday holiday. National Library Week is April 13 to the 19. If you haven't visited a library in a while, be sure to stop in and see what new programs are available as well as the Emmaus Historical Society Easter display including antique eggs, glass and woven baskets. April is also National Poetry Month. Look for poetry displays in the children's area. Woven Welcome, the community-based fiber art/weaving project which welcomes participation by weavers of all ages continues 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays at the library.
At 7 p.m. April 15, David DeKok, investigative reporter and author of "Murder in the Stacks: Penn State, Betsy Aardsma, and the Killer Who Got Away," will discuss the 1969 murder in Penn State's Pattee Library and how for 40 years the killer's identity was unknown, until now.
The Mosaic Mural dedication ceremony will be held 3 p.m. April 19. The project is a collaborative effort with the Emmaus Arts Commission and the East Penn School District. The mosaic features some of Emmaus' landmarks.
Several events for the library's 75th anniversary celebration scheduled the week of May 11 to 16 are planned so far, including a children's book costume party and a bake a book contest with a silent auction of entries.
