Read Across America is a national program that promotes reading and adult involvement in the education of students. It is celebrated across the nation March 2. The goal is to motivate children to read. March is the birthday month of Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss.

Inspired by the theme book "Oh, the Places You Will Go," students and staff are encouraged to wear a shirt or hat representing a favorite vacation destination.

There will be a variety of classroom activities. During the week, gym classes will participate in Dr Seuss based games. Each student will receive a special Dr Seuss item.

Students from the Whitehall High School Key and middle school Leo clubs and LCTI students will be coming to classes to read a story and do a craft. Parents and families are encouraged to join the celebration and plan some evening activity to share with their children. Join in the fun! Read Across America.

Strengthening Families is an evidence-based drug and alcohol prevention program that addresses the issue by teaching youth skills to resist peer pressure, manage stress and set goals for the future.

Parents learn how to balance love and limits for their soon-to-be teenagers. Early prevention is strongly correlated with reduced likelihood of addiction later in life.

Whitehall is one of eight school districts in the Lehigh Valley offering this free program this school year. The Strengthening Families program is offered through a partnership between Penn State Extension in Lehigh County and Valley Youth House and is funded by Lehigh County Drug and Alcohol Services.

It includes seven weekly sessions, which began Tuesday, Feb. 24, and run through April 7. Sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. with a free family dinner in the Whitehall-Coplay Middle School cafeteria.

The program includes free child care for younger family members.

For more information or to register, call Whitehall-Coplay Middle School at 610-439-1439 and ask for your child's guidance counselor.
