Northwestern students bring home medals from SkillsUSA championships

Several Lehigh Career and Technical Institute students, whose home school is Northwestern Lehigh, took home medals at the District 11 Skills-USA Championships Feb. 4 in the Agri-Plex at the Allentown Fairgrounds.

LCTI first place winner from Northwestern was Gavin Mengel, CNC technican. The second-place winner was Michael Showmaker, welding.

Third-place winners were Braxton Reppert, culinary arts; Emily Strohl, health knowledge bowl, and Brittany Miller, medical technology.

More than 400 students from Lehigh Career and Technical Institute; Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School, Career Institute of Technology, Colonial Academy, Monroe Career and Technical Institute and Upper Bucks County Technical School competed in the 53 hands-on skill and leadership competitions .

Students and their families gathered later that evening at Parkland High School to hear the results of the day's competitions and for the winners to receive their medals.

Gold medal winners from all schools will represent District 11 in April at state competition in Hershey.

In addition to awarding medals to the students, SkillsUSA Council partnered with post-secondary educational institutions and area businesses to award more than $60,000 in scholarships and prizes to the medalists of eight competitions.
