SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Salisbury Township School District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Feb. 11 while receiving text updates on the score of the boys basketball game against Wilson in the Colonial League semifinals. The final score was Salisbury 69, Wilson 64 with Salisbury winning the game in overtime.

"Our kids have made us proud for many years," Board President Russell Giordano said. "This boys basketball team is a particular joy. They are unselfish and play as a team. Their success models how people can work together to reach a goal."

Additional accolades for students came from Salisbury High School student representatives Matthew Fainor and Hannah Kahn who congratulated the students who displayed their skills in the recent SkillsUSA competition. In addition, student government representatives successfully held a coin collection competition, raising $357 for the Wounded Warriors organization.

Lastly, Key Club representatives are serving dinner every Friday evening at the Salvation Army, working with students at the center.

The students finished their report noting the annual dodgeball tournament is scheduled for March 8 at SHS.

Board members approved the 2015-2016 proposed preliminary general fund budget reflecting total expenditures in the amount of $33,794,749 requiring a real estate tax levy of 18.1349 mills. The administration was also authorized to apply for all referendum exceptions for which the district may qualify.

The 2015-2016 school calendar was approved with orientation for students in kindergarten, first, sixth and ninth grades Aug. 31. The first day of school for all students is Sept. 1. The calendar can be found on the school district website at www.stsd.org/calendar1516.

The 2015-2016 SHS program of studies was also approved. It can be accessed at www.stsd.org, under the high school tab.

The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit budget was approved for 2015-2016. As of January, there are 179 Salisbury students being serviced by the CLIU.

The Lehigh Carbon Community College 2015-2016 budget was also approved in the amount of $6,186,337. Salisbury's portion is $213,624.

The next operations committee meeting is 7 p.m. March 2 in the administration building.

The next curriculum committee meeting is 7 p.m March 4 at Western Salisbury Elementary School

The next monthly meeting for the school board is 7:30 p.m. March 18 in the administration building.

Giordano also announced interviews will be held 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 for the open school board position. It is expected the board will appoint a new board member following the interviews.

Giordano reminded interested residents petitions are available now for the May primary for the open board position. Petitions must be turned in by March 10.
