Kern resigns after 35 years

Following the January reorganization meeting for Washington Township, it was believed George Kern, emergency management coordinator, had not been reappointed.

At the Jan. 6 meeting, the issue was noted and supervisors said they would check with Kern and see if he wanted the position.

Kern attended the board's Feb. 3 meeting and said his appointment came from former Gov. Dick Thornburgh and did not need the local appointment.

He said his appointment would remain in effect until a replacement was found.

Kern said it is a position without glory, and offered to help the new person in the beginning. That person would also be appointed by the governor.

Kern said when he was needed, he could always be reached.

In addition to the 35 years he was with Washington Township, he also served 25 years with Slatington until the municipality found a replacement.

"I am turning in my resignation. The new person will have to attend one of two classes being offered in March and April. I saved the township over $3 million by not taking any pay," Kern said.

He closed by saying it had been a pleasure to serve the township and shook hands with each of the supervisors. Supervisor Josh Friebolin thanked him for his service over the years.

The advertised ordinance to join the Municipal Recreation Authority was rescinded because it had the word "Walnutport" in it. Discussions will continue.
