Grundsow aficionados celebrate Groundhog's Day despite icy weather

The word is out. The revered groundhog of Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw has made his prognostication and the word is six more weeks of winter.

The 79th annual Fersommling was held Feb. 2 at the Germansville Fire Company and, despite the cold and ice, about 150 members and guests attended.

This was the 10th year the celebration took place at the fire company.

Previously, Fersommlings were held at Northampton County Community College and about 800 people could be expected to attend.

This was a time for fellowship and reminiscing about old times, a reunion of sorts where members got to see each other again.

Member David Rauch lamented the fact the turnout is dwindling.

He cited the community college attendence, where members came hours before hand to save seats for others.

Looking around the room, one could only see a few younger members in the audience.

Musical entertainment for the night was presented by The Happy Dutchmen.

Dinner consisted of geroscht hinkel, frisha und gschmokdi wascht plus siess grumbiere, welshkan, tzalawdt and other dishes.

For the English speaking, this was roast chicken, fresh and smoked sausage with sweet potatoes, corn and salad.

The meal as usual was excellent.

Robert Andrews led the members in the oath of allegiance to the revered groundhog.

After dinner, the audience sang classic folk songs such as "Hei-Lie, Hei-Lo," "Good-Bye, Susanna Good-Bye" and "Schnitzelbank."

Mayor Thomas D. Reenock of Northampton gave a short greeting, followed by the recognition of members from other lodges.

William Meck, Lee Haas and other board members gave short speeches and related some anecdotes to the audience.

In the end, everyone had a good time and will be looking forward to next year – the 80th year of Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains on da Lechaw.
