Swim seniors prepare for big meets
For six Emmaus seniors - Tori Bingham, Vinnie Cucchiara, Claire Frank, Theo McAllister, Carter Paules and John Woltornist - the home meet against Pocono Mountain East was their final dual meet in their home pool. The six were recognized for their performances over their careers during a break in the meet, which both the boys and girls teams won.
Paules made the most of senior day, tying a pool record with a time of 1:55.43 in the 200-yard individual medley, which was set by North Penn's Dominic Szabo in 2000.
The look back is a little shorter for McAllister, who just joined the team this season, but has made an impact both in the pool and in helping younger swimmers to develop. Coach Tim O'Connor believes that all six made an impact during their time at the school and has been impressed with them both in the pool and with how they've conducted themselves as students.
"They were great," said O'Connor. "And you add a kid like Theo McAllister this year; you wouldn't know that he's a new kid, because he really blended very, very well with our team. It's a great senior class and all of them did a great job. I'm sad to see them go, but that's the life of coaching and we have to find kids to step up next year and I know that we will."
Looking back over her career at Emmaus and the realization that it's winding down, Bingham has some mixed emotions.
"I'm sad, but it's been a lot of fun," said Bingham. "I'm just going to remember all the people I met and all the friends I made."
Woltornist admits that he's learned a lot through being a member of the team and is philosophical about the end of high school and is still looking forward to what's left of the season, including the annual rivalry meet with Parkland, which will lead into districts and states.
"I think it's a great end to the year. We have a very new team, but it's good that as you grow older, you can educate the younger people," he said. "We've had a great team aspect this year and I'm very happy about what's happened over the last four years.
"We've had a great season and have had a lot of great meets and it's all winding down, but there's a lot to look forward to and I think we'll be great in districts."
Thursday's meet with Parkland is always the highlight of the season. The boys and girls have different goals in the meet, with the boys (10-0, 11-1) looking to go undefeated in the EPC and the girls (9-1, 9-3) looking to knock Parkland (10-0, 12-0) from the ranks of the unbeaten.
"Our boys know that Parkland boys give us fits," said O'Connor. "They always race us tough and I expect nothing different. The girls team has dominated us for years and on paper, they're still a better team than us, but that's why you swim the meets. We don't have a front line that can match Sienna Salvaggio, Erika Freeman, Erin Jordan; we don't have any of them, so it's going to take a total team."
For Cucchiara, who competes both in diving and swimming, the Parkland meet has held a lot of excitement. While many look toward their senior meet with Parkland as being the biggest of their career, the meet will have to be something pretty special to top his favorite memories of going up against the Trojans.
"I don't know that anything can top my sophomore year when we were very close with them and it came down to the last relay and we just got 'em," he said. "I'm sure it will be nice. It's always cool to have a big competition like that."
In addition to traveling to Parkland to face the Trojans Thursday, Emmaus will be the site of the annual Last Chance Meet for swimmers to qualify for districts. That meet will be held on Saturday, with the district meet being held at Parkland on February 27-28.
