With the end of the regular season here, the Salisbury boys and girls swim teams are focusing on the upcoming district tournament to keep a number of the competitors' seasons alive.

Last Tuesday's loss to Stroudsburg may have kept both the boys and girls out of the win column once again, but the Falcons continued to improve toward that goal of postseason competition.

The boys fell to Stroudsburg by a score of 67-26, while the girls came up short, 59-35.

"It's an interesting, bittersweet time at the end of the year," head coach Ken Vincent said. "As we get towards the end of the year, we start to see who is going to districts and who is not. The kids who are qualified for districts start to get a lot more focused and a lot more serious about their training.

"[Tuesday against Southern Lehigh] is the day that anybody that doesn't have a district time is the day that they're really going to focus on their best."

On the girls' side against Stroudsburg, Kaleigh Bobeck set a season-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:20.70, which earned her a first-place finish on the day.

Madaket Chassard finished third in the 500-yard freestyle, but she was also able to post a season-best time in the event as districts approach. She touched the wall in 6:31.40 after entering the meet with a seed time of 6:36.12.

"She is doing real well in the distance events, so she might make it in the 500," Vincent said.

Taylar Velten took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.75), while Rachel Costantini placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.18) to round out the top finishers on the girls' side. The 200-yard freestyle relay team also finished in first.

"Their [Stroudsburg's] girls are very strong," Vincent said. "I did not expect them to have as many strong swimmers as they had."

On the boys' side, Mahlon Reihman finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.91) and 500-yard freestyle (5:01.76). Ben Weiner (200-yard free, 100-yard butterfly) and Gavin Carey (200-yard IM, 100-yard breaststroke) finished in the top two in each of their individual events.

"I think they [Stroudsburg] had 13 or 14 guys, and I think we had maybe six," Vincent said. "So they had over double the number of guys. It was the same sort of story where we won a bunch of events, but lost the meet by a lot because we just didn't have the people to fill the blocks behind it."

Tuesday's meet against Southern Lehigh, one in which results were not available at time of press, proved to be the final dual meet in which competitors could post district-qualifying times.

A number of swimmers have already qualified for districts, but Vincent is hoping a few more have their name called following Tuesday's meet against the Spartans on senior night.

"I'm really excited about it, and I'm hoping we can add a lot more tomorrow [against Southern Lehigh]," Vincent said. "There are a lot of opportunities for a lot of the swimmers, and I'm really encouraged by what I see them getting ready to do."
