Strengthening Families is an evidence-based drug and alcohol prevention program that teaches youth skills to resist peer pressure, manage stress and set goals for the future. Parents learn how to balance love and limits for their soon-to-be teenagers. Early prevention is strongly correlated with a reduced likelihood of addiction later in life.

Whitehall is one of eight school districts in the Lehigh Valley offering this free program this school year. Strengthening Families is offered through a partnership between Penn State Extension in Lehigh County and Valley Youth House, and is funded by Lehigh County Drug and Alcohol Services.

Seven weekly sessions run Tuesdays, Feb. 25 through April 8, in the middle school cafeteria. The sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. with a free family dinner. The program takes place from 6 to 8 p.m.

Free child care for younger family members will be available.

Help your child earn school-wide positive behavior program reward coupons by attending weekly sessions.

For more information or to register, call the middle school at 610-439-1439 and ask for your child's guidance counselor or an administrator.

With winter weather upon us, parents are encouraged to discuss arrangements with their children in the event of early dismissal.

It is helpful to listen to daily weather reports for situations that may affect the school schedules. Plan what radio and TV stations to listen to or check the school website at www.whitehallcoplay.org.

During bad weather, the district will close school for the day, delay opening of schools or close early.

In the event of a two-hour delay, the district will use the following modified kindergarten schedule: a.m. kindergarten starts 10:50 a.m. and ends 12:40 p.m. The p.m. kindergarten classes will start 1:25 p.m. and end 3:15 p.m.

For the modified kindergarten schedule, the bus for the p.m. children will arrive approximately 50-60 minutes later than the regular pick up time for school. Also, p.m. kindergarten students will be dismissed at the regular dismissal time.

Due to weather and traffic conditions, the school and transportation office cannot predict the times for the different bus stops. The district asks you do not call the offices.

Kindergarten registration has begun for the 2015-16 school year.
