A 54-year-old Schuylkill County man was killed when his vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision around 1:37 p.m. Feb. 2 at the intersection of Route 309 and Gun Club Road, Lynn Township.
Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said John J. Merchlinsky Jr., of 1210 Main St., Gilberton, was pronounced dead 2:26 p.m. at the scene by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner David Krause. Grim said the cause of Merchlinsky's death is attributed to multiple blunt force trauma. He ruled the manner of his death an accident.
According to State Police Troop M Fogels-ville, Merchlinsky was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado north on Route 309 when his truck rear-ended a 1995 Ford F-250 driven by David P. Matz, 30, of Schuylkill.
Police say after impact the Silverado traveled into the southbound lane where it was struck by a 2012 Mack CHU 600 truck tractor hauling a 2008 Polaris trailer driven by Willis F. Helfrich Jr., 58, of Andreas.
The Silverado then traveled back into the northbound lane where it was struck by a 2007 Freightliner Columbia 120 hauling a 2013 Wanco trailer driven by Carlos R. Madera, 50, of Hazelton, before coming to a final rest on the westbound shoulder.
Route 309 was closed for approximately five hours during the investigation, police say.
