Lady Hornets' seniors seek one more victory

You could say that Jenna Reid and Ashley Petre are in a class by themselves. The two players are the only seniors on the young Emmaus girls basketball roster and have played their part in helping younger players learn the ropes through what has turned out to be a difficult season for the team.

Friday night's 37-30 loss to Parkland was the Hornets' eighth straight defeat, dropping the team's record to 3-11 in the EPC and 5-15 overall this season. As far as the record is concerned, the 2014-2015 season has been the worst that the two seniors have had to endure in their time with the team, but neither one is letting that stand in the way of enjoying their time with the team.

"It's still been a lot of fun," said Petre. "It would have been great to have a better season, but we're still trying to win and hopefully, we'll break this streak before the season is over so we can go out with a bright spot."

There are two games remaining, both against East Penn Conference foes. The first is a trip to Whitehall (7-7, 11-9) before the team ends the season at historic Rockne Hall against Central Catholic (14-0, 19-1). Neither game will be an easy opportunity for a win, but the two seniors keep encouraging their teammates.

"It's been tough to go through this streak, but I don't think anyone is giving up," said Reid, who has broken into the starting lineup this season. "We all want to win and it would be nice to find a way to win at least one of these games."

"I just told the team that we should be doing all that we can do to send our seniors out on a high note," said head coach Jeff Williams after a recent loss to Northampton. "Those two have worked hard. They're always positive and they deserve to have better memories of this season."

Both seniors were honored on senior night prior to the start of the game against Parkland, the final home game of their high school career.

"It's hard to believe that it's almost over," said Reid. "I'll always remember these times and the friendships that I've made by playing basketball. We've become almost like sisters."

"I'm definitely going to remember the bonds that I've made with the girls," said Petre. "Because they've always been there for us. It's fun to be out there."

Petre is headed to Kutztown to study early education, while Reid is headed to Pittsburgh to major in marketing and psychology.

"They're both going to do well," said Williams. "I've gotten to know them over these last four seasons and they've been great to coach. They're both receptive to what you're trying to tell them and they have worked hard to become better players.

"Away from the court, they're both exceptional kids and they represent Emmaus and the program very well and that's the important thing."
