EMMAUS COLUMN

Emmaus is inviting you to have a blast at its annual SnowBlast Winter Festival Feb. 6 and 7.

The festival schedule includes free, family-oriented community-wide art related events.

Snowflakes displayed in the store windows during the festival were created by students from Lincoln and Jefferson elementary schools, Seven Generations Charter School, Emmaus High School art club and St. Ann School.

The Emmaus Historical Society museum, 563 Chestnut St., will be open for its Winter Wonderland, 5 to 9 p.m. Feb. 6 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 7.

The winter exhibits will be displayed through March 7.

The special programs planned by the Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., during SnowBlast Winter Arts Festival, include: 10 to 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 2 p.m., Feb. 7, storytime, "Mystery of Winter Artistry,' featuring a furry puppet friend; Literary Lunch Jr. for fourth and fifth graders to read and discuss, "Chasing Vermeer," by Blue Balliett (registration required); 2 to 2:30 p.m. a performance of a few songs and a winter-themed sing-a-long by a Wescosville Elementary School singing group, The Liberty Lane Singers. This group participated in the 2014 Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade. Everyone is invited to play board games and complete Frozen puzzles 3 to 4 p.m. There will be a special afternoon appearance by the Ice Princess performing her skating magic. The Emmaus Public Library has scheduled the following children's programs for February. Block parties for three to five year olds will be held 11 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 3 and for two year olds 11 to 11:30 a.m. Feb 5. There is no registration required. The children are invited to come and build with the library's architectural blocks.

A story time for Suns (two year old toddlers with an adult), which includes stories, songs and a craft, will be held 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26. A story time for Stars (pre-schoolers through age five) will be held 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Registration is required for Suns and Stars story times.

Literary Lunch is a program for middle school age readers to meet to read and discuss books, noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 21. Attendees should bring their lunches; the library will provide dessert and a drink. Teen Read is a program for high school age readers to meet to read and discuss books, 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 12. Refreshments will be provided by the library.

Twilight Readers for kindergarten and first graders includes books and a craft and will be held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2, 9 and 23. Registration is required for Literary Lunch, Twilight Readers and Teen Read.

Books and Barks, the read aloud to the Lehigh Valley Therapy Dogs program, will be held in the community room. 6:45 to 8 p.m. Feb. 22.

The library staff invites families to visit the library for a fun film 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19. Pajamas, pillows and sleeping bags are encouraged. Slippers are required.

There will be an adult book discussion group meeting 7 p.m. Feb. 10. Registration is required.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health will be at the library for free blood pressure screenings 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 23.

Each month, the library shows a movie for adults selected either for its classic appeal or popularity. Due to licensing restrictions, the titles of the movies cannot be publicized, but if interested, call or visit for each month's selection. The Feb. 11 movie starts 1 p.m.; the Feb. 21 movie starts 2 p.m.

The library is beginning to plan for its 75th anniversary celebration. The public is invited to a meeting 11 a.m. Feb. 14 to learn more about what the committee is planning and ways to become involved with the celebration. Members of local organizations are encouraged to attend.

The library began serving the public in 1940 from a rented space on Chestnut Street.

I was curious as to what books may have been popular with the library patrons during the early years. Among them were "Gone With the Wind," "The Good Earth," "Drums Along the Mohawk," "The Yearling," "Rebecca," "The Grapes of Wrath," "How Green Was My Valley," "Mrs. Miniver" and "For Whom the Bells Toll." How many have you read?

The Emmaus Winter Farmers' Market will take place Feb. 1 and 15. The Winter Market is held at the KNBT parking lot, 235 Main St. For information, visit www.emmausmarket. com.

All senior citizens over the age of 55 are invited to the Emmaus Senior Citizens meetings at St. Matthew's E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The group meets Fridays 1 p.m. The February programs are Feb. 6: musician Roger Trice; Feb. 13: musician Ken Purcell; Feb. 20: a spokesperson from the Emmaus Police Department and Feb. 27 is game day.
