LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Conservation district

The Lehigh County Conservation District will host an event noon to 8 p.m. Feb. 17 for farmers seeking assistance in developing their manure management plans.

According to Pennsylvania environmental regulations, all farms, regardless of size, handling manure must have a manure management plan on their operation.

The plan details when and where manure is spread, how it is stored, and how much is taken off the farm.

Some required elements of the plan include maps, crop information and recordkeeping.

In 2011, Pennsylvania released the manure management manual, which all farmers that either produce manure or handle it in any way must complete.

The LCCD assists farmers in developing their manure management plans.

On Feb. 17, the LCCD will host an event where any farmer who walks in will receive one-on-one help in completing their manure management plans.

In addition, any farmer who needs a map of their farm will also receive one-on-one training on how to build a map at the www.PAOneStop.org website.

While walk-ins will be accepted, to cut down on wait time, a reservation can be made by contacting Damian Painter at 610-391-9583, ext. 26 and arranging an appointment any time between noon and 8 p.m.

Because this event is planned to help as many farmers as possible, visits to farms will not be possible that day, but a visit on another day can be arranged by contacting Painter.
