Penn State Extension is offering two workshops for gardeners and backyard homesteaders.
The workshop titled "Gardening to Feed Your Family" is scheduled 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Lehigh County Extension Office, 4184 Dorney Park Road.
The workshop is for those individuals who have a garden and are interested in learning how to better plan their harvest for a continuous supply of fresh produce during the growing season.
Participants will learn about proper gardening techniques, soil amendments, composting and identifying common diseases and pests. Gardeners also will discuss how to calculate crop spacing requirements for desired yields and how to select the best crops to plant to save money. There is a cost for the workshop.

The workshop titled "Backyard Chickens" is scheduled 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Lehigh County Extension Office, 4184 Dorney Park Road.
The workshop will include a basic overview of how to properly care for chickens and workshop participants will discuss different breeds and the specifics of raising poultry for production of eggs or meat. Live chickens will also be on hand to help presenters demonstrate proper handling techniques and to showcase different breeds.
