on dean's list

The following area residents earned dean's honor list for the spring semester of the 2013-14 at Moravian College, Bethlehem.

receive honors

Sean Maydick of Allentown and Alyssa Fixl of New Tripoli, both doctor of pharmacy students, were named to the summer 2014 dean's list at University of the Sciences, Philadelphia.

Selection for this award is based on completing and passing all assigned courses with no grade below a "C" and attaining an academic average of at least 3.4 for courses taken in the summer semester of 2014.

DeSales Univ.

Resident earns alumni award

Jason Barnes was awarded the Young Alumni Achievement Award during the school's 2014 Homecoming Weekend at DeSales University, Coopersburg.

The Young Alumni Achievement Award recognizes alumni who graduated within the last 10 years and who have made notable accomplishments while maintaining a strong commitment to the University, family, community, and profession.

Barnes earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 2004 as well as an Master's degree in business administration from DeSales in 2007.

In 2013, he graduated from the Villanova University School of Law with a master's of taxation.

He has more than 10 years of experience in public accounting.

Barnes is a senior manager in ParenteBeard LLC tax group.

Recently, he was honored by Lehigh Valley Business as a member of the 2013 Forty Under 40 class for his strong commitment to business growth, professional excellence, and community service.

Barnes and his wife, Katie, live in Orefield.

Student awarded scholarship

Nicholas Roehler of Allentown whose is majoring in music performance, was recently awarded the Cassie Davino Memorial Scholarship, the Horace and Genevieve Bowman Scholarship and the Susan Smykla Udell '57 Scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year at the State University of New York at Potsdam, N.Y.

Accomplished SUNY Potsdam undergraduate and graduate students are recognized for their achievements with support for their educational experience.

Last year, SUNY Potsdam awarded more than $2.6 million in scholarships to 1,067 students, including $821,000 from donor-funded scholarships through the Potsdam College Foundation.

Alvernia Univ.

Student serves

as peer mentor

Shayla Lapp, of Allentown, served as a peer mentor for the fall 2014 semester at Alvernia University, Reading.

Lapp, a graduate of Liberty High School, is majoring in nursing.

Every first year seminar class at Alvernia University is assigned a peer mentor.

These mentors are high-achieving, upper-division students who act as guides and additional resources for first year students, as they adjust to college life and academic expectations.

Each mentor establishes his or her unique relationship with students in his or her section, but all students can expect peer mentors to model successful time management techniques, help them learn how to find and use information about student support services, and guide them toward informed decision making.

The following students completed requirements for graduation at the summer commencement ceremony held Sept. 7, 2014 in the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center, Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre.

Ashland UNIV.

Resident member of volleyball team

Ashley Lorah of Allentown, competed on Ashland University's Club Volleyball Team, Ashland, Ohio.

The daughter of Scott and Beth Lorah of Allentown, she is majoring in exercise science.

Lorah is a 2011 graduate of Parkland High School.

Club sports provide the Ashland University students an opportunity to play at a competitive level against other universities outside the realm of varsity athletics.

It also provides students with opportunities for recreation and physical activity in a wide variety of sports.

Competitive clubs contend with sport clubs from other towns or universities, traveling to different events throughout the year.

Kutztown resident

earns honors

Erica Lammers, an art and art history major from Kutztown, has been awarded the dean's award for academic excellence for the spring 2014 semester at Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y.

The dean's award is given to students with a 3.30 or higher grade-point average while enrolled in 3.75 or more course hours.
