Boys basketball beats Beca, falls to Whitehall

In some of their losses this season, the Emmaus boys basketball team has had trouble putting up points. That was not the case last Tuesday night against Bethlehem Catholic at Emmaus High School.

Four players scored in double figures, and the Green Hornet defense stifled the Golden Hawks all night in an 89-55 victory.

David Kachelries (19 points), Joey Polcynski (12), Brandon Rapose (10) and Jacob Feiertag (10) all hit the double-digit plateau, and Tyler Prescott (9 points) was one point shy of taht category.

Each win Emmaus can come away with in the East Penn Conference is important because of the Hornets' daunting nonconference schedule. Just two days before the Becahi game, Emmaus fell to defending Class AAA state runner-up Susquehanna Township, its fifth noncoference loss this season.

"We don't look at past games because we have to keep looking forward," said Rapose. "Susquehanna is a good team, but we want to make districts and so we have to look at each game in front of us and not worry about what happened in the past. The rest of our season is ahead of us."

It did not take long for Emmaus to take control of the game Tuesday night. After a three-point play by Kachelries midway through the first quarter, the Green Hornets went up 16-4 and never allowed the Golden Hawks to get within single digits after that.

Emmaus put the game away with its transition offense run by Kachelries (9 assists) and Prescott (5 assists), and Feiertag, who scored six of his 10 points in the second quarter, taking a 46-29 lead at halftime.

"We ran the break really well tonight and that worked out well for us," said Rapose, who added seven rebounds. "David [Kachelries] runs out well and finds you. Joey [Polcynski] rebounds the ball well. And so if we can get the ball and push it up court quick to get baskets in transition, that's when we're at our best."

Six other Green Hornets made the scoresheet. Micaiah Fraction tallied seven points. Cameron Widdoss, Jacob Scarnulis and Ian Nakao scored six each. Collin Riegel and Jacob Faust added two points apiece for Emmaus.

With sophomore guard Matt Kachelries returning to the lineup this past Friday night against Whitehall, the Green Hornets are now at full strength and look to continue to push through a tight EPC schedule.

"At the beginning of the year we picked our goals and the first one was to make districts," said Rapose. "To be a great team in this league we have to beat great teams. For us to stay focused and play like we did tonight will be a challenge because each team will be tough to beat."

Emmaus followed last Tuesday's win over Bethlehem Catholic with a Friday night loss to Whitehall, 55-47, to fall to 7-8 overall and 7-3 in EPC games.
