LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Wrestlers drop four matches last week

It started with an important Colonial League divisional match against Southern Lehigh last week and ended with a trip to Great Valley High School for a tri-meet over the weekend.

Unfortunately for the Salisbury wrestling team, the results were mostly similar across the board.

After coming within a few points of their first win in a 42-36 defeat to the Spartans last Wednesday, the Falcons dropped their fourth league match the next day against Northwestern, 64-12. Salisbury also suffered losses against Great Valley (63-6) and Notre Dame-Green Pond (51-21).

"Northwestern is definitely a young and quality team, and we knew that going in," head coach Eric Snyder said. "I hoped we would have been a little more competitive in some matches, but I am happy with the guys that earned wins for us."

Zach Adams is one of two Falcons that earned wins against the Tigers. Following a scoreless first period, Adams was able to secure a cradle from the top position in the second period before pinning Northwestern's Matt Shetayh in 3:35.

Adams, who is now 10-4 on the season, also picked up decision victories over the weekend. He earned a 7-6 decision against Great Valley's Jared Zupito and a 7-1 decision against Notre Dame's Raymond Markulics. He has been one of the more consistent wrestlers for Salisbury thus far.

"Zach is one of the guys we expect to be very competitive every time he steps on the mat," Snyder said. "He's been that way for the most part this season. One of the things that makes Zach who he is, is that he does not panic in any position at any time on the mat. Sometimes he puts himself in bad positions on the mat, but he never panics. He is never out of a match because of that."

Shane Simononis also won via fall against the Tigers, pinning Sam Day in 1:12. Simononis' fall over Notre Dame's Michael Salmento in the second period improved him to 8-7 on the season.

"Shane has been having an up-and-down season," Snyder said. "I don't think we have him at a level we are happy with yet either. We have to get Shane to be more consistent every time he steps on the mat. We, as coaches, need to better prepare all of our guys for when they step on the mat."

Alex Nicholas captured a decision against Great Valley, while Dillon Trenge and Bailey Marcks pinned their Crusader opponents.

While the Falcons are hoping to earn a victory every time they step on the mat, the upcoming weeks present a number of opportunities to capture that first win of the season.

First is a meeting with Catasauqua (1-3) on Wednesday at Salisbury High School at 6:45 p.m. Then, the Falcons host winless Palmerton (0-4) in a week looking to get in the win column.

Snyder and the Falcons understand, however, that it all depends on how the team responds on the mat in the upcoming days.

"We need to get better in all aspects on the mat on our feet, on top and on bottom," Snyder said. "I think we have a couple matches coming up here in the next few weeks, especially with Catty and Palmerton, that if we wrestle like we are capable of, we will win matches. If we continue to wrestle like we have been, it will continue to be a long season."
