Hornet boys end four-game losing streak
There were some notable streaks snapped last Tuesday night at Emmaus High School. In a back-and-forth affair which saw big leads evaporate for both teams, Emmaus lost a big advantage and then fought back to take down Allen in another classic between the two teams.
The victory ended a four game-losing streak for the Green Hornets, and snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Canaries.
Emmaus (6-7 overall, 6-2 East Penn Conference) went from a 30-19 lead at halftime to a seven-point deficit in the third quarter and then regrouped for a dominant fourth period that paved the way to a 64-57 win over the Canaries (9-3, 6-2) .
There wasn't a lot that Allen did right in the first half, as Emmaus took control of the game through the first 16 minutes. Joey Polczynski was on pace for a career night after the first quarter. The junior finished the opening frame with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore David Kachelries tallied eight points, two assists, and two steals to propel the Green Hornets to a big halftime edge.
But the start of the second half was a different story. Allen outscored Emmaus 21-4 early in the third period and took a one point lead in the final quarter, after Kachelries scored six straight to keep his team close. The Canaries actually scored the first seven points of the second half.
"We came out sluggish and they came out aggressive and hit all of their shots," Kachelries said. "But we just kept pushing for the win. I just played my game and tried to get my team involved."
The Green Hornets went on to score the first four points of the fourth quarter. But the Canaries stayed within striking distance.
Bryson Walton had 22 points and seven assists. Tyrese Martin scored off one of Walton's assists, and then Walton made two free throws to tie the game at 48-48 with 5:13 left. But from there, Emmaus took command, scoring on almost every possession the rest of the way.
Kachelries, who finished with 19 points, continually made plays when Emmaus needed them most.
"We've played a lot of tough and close games lately," said Kachelries. "It feels good to pull this one out and get back to winning ways."
Emmaus was back to its grueling nonconference schedule with a loss to last year's PIAA Class AAA runner-up Susquehanna Township last Sunday.
