Andrews, Smoker lead hockey team to win
The scoreboard after the final whistle showed 63 shots on goal for the losing team, but just 23 for the winning team. That stat line summed up the quality over quantity in the 8-4 win that Emmaus/Pleasant Valley had over the Diocese team last Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.
The Green Hornets made the most of their shots, while the Diocese team, which is made up of players from Central Catholic, Bethlehem Catholic, and Notre Dame (Green Pond) couldn't get enough past Hornet senior goalie Michael Smoker.
"It's been a great season so far," said Smoker. "We're playing strong and playing like one of the top teams in the league. This win is big for us because we lost a close one to them earlier in the year and now we jumped them. We needed this one to help us moving forward with a tough schedule."
The win moves Emmaus (6-4-2) to third place in the standings of the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League. The Diocese (6-5-1) dropped to sixth.
Smoker finished with 59 saves on the 63 shots, and each one was big to keep his team ahead, where they were since ten minutes in.
David Andrews, who played most of his high school career on defense, scored the first of his four goals at the 6:40 mark with a back flick of his stick that got by the Diocese goalie.
"It hasn't been that hard," Andrews said of the transition from defense to offense. "I've played offense before, but I'm used to defense so it was weird at first. I was just trying to fire the puck at the net and get as many opportunities for us as possible."
It was the Diocese that had a plethora of opportunities, but could not take advantage of them, as Smoker appeared to be a brick wall in front of net.
Wyatt Weber, Chad Lawrence, Matthew Sheaffer and Daniel Miller scored on goal each for the Green Hornets. Brian McCabe also contributed an assist.
Emmaus will now have a two-week layoff because of Martin Luther King Jr day.
