Trenge takes fourth place at tournament
After competing in the Archbishop Wood Tournament on January 20, the Salisbury wrestling team had one league dual meet scheduled prior to Saturday's Selinsgrove Holiday Tournament.
Unfortunately, that meeting with Northwestern last Tuesday was postponed to a later date due to a number of skin issues on the team.
Without a wrestling meet scheduled in between two of the more difficult tournaments of the season, head coach Eric Snyder believes that postponement, along with a practice slate that included limited wrestling time on the mat, had a hand in his team's performance.
"I don't think we wrestled real well at Selinsgrove," Snyder said. "We were dealing with some issues leading up to the tournament that did not allow us to do a lot of wrestling in practice, and I think that impacted the way the kids wrestled."
Four different Falcons medaled in the tournament, including Dillon Trenge, who finished in fourth place.
"We were happy with the way Dillon Trenge wrestled in taking fourth," Snyder said. "He was much more aggressive, which we have been trying to get him to do all season."
While the results may not have been what Snyder expected, he is seeing the continued effort and determination, despite battling a number of issues along the way.
"It was a tough tournament all around, even for the guys who medaled," Snyder said. "We brought home four medals, but I just thought we would have a better showing. I give the guys credit; they wrestle hard every time they step on the mat.
"We just need to make ourselves better in the room. The coaches have to take some responsibility in that aspect as well and better prepare these guys to wrestle."
The Falcons won't return to the mat for over a week after that Selinsgrove Tournament. During that time off, Snyder and the Falcons will be working to improve in a number of areas.
One of the biggest points of emphasis is getting better in the down position and becoming more aggressive.
"We definitely need to get better on bottom," Snyder said. "We get rode out way too much and give up too many back points from the bottom position. We will be spending a lot of time working on those things, and we will be stressing to these guys to believe in themselves and what they are doing."
The Falcons host Southern Lehigh next Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. to get back into Colonial League action. Their dual meet against Northwestern will take place the following day before the Falcons travel to Great Valley High School for a tri-meet with Notre Dame-Green Pond on Friday.
