Donaldson eyes role as college kicker
In the summer between his sophomore and junior years at Salisbury High School, Mason Donaldson spent countless hours with head coach Andy Cerco working on his punting form and technique.
From that point on, his goal has been to one day kick for a college team.
He recently completed his junior season, one that saw Donaldson average 39.7 yards per punt. He is doing everything he can to make his dream a reality. He has been to a number of kicking showcases and competitions dating back to last summer.
"That's when I started to realize that I had a strong enough leg for it, but I didn't have the mechanics for it," Donaldson said. "My parents really buckled down with me, and they both saw potential in me.
"Now every day after school I come home and punt for like an hour. It's a lot of hard work and stuff, but I realized just recently that I have a chance to do it."
Donaldson attended the 11th Annual STS College Exposure Camp on December 13 in New Jersey. With a number of colleges in attendance, he showcased his punting, kickoff and field goal skills.
Like a number of the national competitions he attends, many of the kicking drills remained relatively the same. The STS College Exposue Camp, however, proved to be the most instrumental to Donaldson than the previous events.
"This was the first time I ever worked with this group of guys," Donaldson said. "It was different competition than the guys from Kohl's.
"They really focused on the aspect of helping me kick and learn more. That one was definitely the most beneficial. The ones with Kohl's in the summer in Wisconsin and the one by Pitt were the most challenging. Those were with some of the best people in the country, so the level of competition was much higher."
Before his trip to New Jersey, Donaldson attended the Kohl's Professional Kicking Camp Competition at Theil College, roughly an hour north of Pittsburgh. The stage was a bit brighter than the STS College Exposure Camp, as hundreds of players attended the event.
Donaldson finished as one of 10 wildcard selections that may have a chance to attend the National Underclassmen Showcase in Miami.
Prior to the start of his exceptional junior season, Donaldson traveled to Kettle Moraine, Wisconsin, for the Kohl's Professional Kicking National Competition where he competed among hundreds of players from all across the country.
"The idea is to be able to compete with the best people in the country," Donaldson said. "That one was much bigger, and that was a two-day one.
"I didn't know what I was mainly going to focus on and stuff like that. So I did all three there; I did field goal. I did kickoff and I did punt."
To go along with his near 40-yard punt average, Donaldson recorded 51 kickoffs for Salisbury this season, totaling 2,416 yards and 10 touchbacks. He also tallied four punts over 50 yards in 2014.
Other than the showcases, Donaldson also works with Jim Cooper from Five Star Kicking, in New Jersey, to hone his kicking skills when he has the opportunity.
Donaldson was also a gifted wide receiver on a Falcon offense that continues to make strides behind junior quarterback Tevon Weber and a strong junior class. As Weber's favorite target, Donaldson hauled in 35 catches for 491 yards and a single-season record nine touchdowns.
"We've been working together for years," Donaldson said. "We have a ton of chemistry between the two of us, both on the field and off the field. He knows what I want, and I know what he wants."
Eastern PA Football has also invited Donaldson to the 2015 Beast of the East Underclassmen Showcase.
