Lynn board discusses ambulance corps' future

The future of the Northwestern Ambulance Corps was the hot topic of the evening at the Dec. 11 Lynn Township supervisors meeting.

Several scenarios were discussed. A meeting will be held with Northwestern, NOVA and Cetronia ambulance corps and the townships affected to consider merger or change in coverage.

Currently, Northwestern covers Lynn and Heidelberg townships and a part of Albany, in Berks County.

The corps is experiencing financial problems and requested help from the townships in its service area.

New Tripoli Fire Company is considering an addition to its building in New Tripoli to house the ambulance and crew.

A two-story facility is being considered with a training room on the second floor.

Financial discussions are ongoing with New Tripoli Bank. The existing ambulance station on Route 309 would be sold to pay off debt.

A temporary location for the ambulance would be necessary until the facility is built.

There would be room for the ambulance and crew in the Lynn Township building behind the administration office.

In other matters, New Tripoli Chief Peter Christ told the board there will be a Hazmat refresher course Jan. 19, 2015, at the fire company.

The Wertman Farms subdivision, along Springhouse Road, was the only subdivision on the agenda. A 30-acre parcel is being subdivided from the farm and given to a relative.

As there was inclement weather, Roadmaster Bruce Raber was tending to the roads, so Chairman Justin Smith gave the road report. Smith said the road crew hauled scrap to the scrap yard, and were doing crack sealing, painting equipment, cleaning culverts and repairing signs.

Smith reported he had a meeting with PennDOT officials concerning the proposed new driveway to access a portion of Ontelaunee Park.

This driveway would be located at the former pool site.

PennDOT said there was adequate sight distance and a permit could be issued.

Solicitor Mark Fisher convened a public hearing to discuss the addition of 82.87 acres of land to the Agricultural Security Area.

The four-parcel property is owned by Greg Snyder.

Supervisors adopted a resolution to incorporate this property into the Ag Security Area.

Two ordinances, relating to the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors insurance coverage will be advertised. Adoption will be set for next year.

The Sanctuary at Haafsville was given the contract to pick up stray animals in the township. The cost will be capped at $650 for the year.

Mike Miller came before the board to discuss his Farm Aid Concert proposal.

He requested to have a concert April 25, 2015, with different bands playing all day.

Supervisors advised him to obtain insurance coverage for the event and to send a copy to the township.

Township Secretary Tammy White announced the close-out meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Dec. 29.

The supervisors' reorganization meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Jan. 5, 2015. The board's regular meeting will take place following reorganization.

Auditors will reorganize 7 p.m. Jan. 6, 2015.
