Girls improve to 4-0 in league

Prior to their toughest test of the season, a matchup against unbeaten Palmerton on Monday night, the Salisbury girls' basketball team had to take care of business against another Colonial League foe.

Against Wilson on Thursday, there was little doubt that the Falcons would enter that pivotal matchup against Palmerton with identical 4-0 records in the Colonial League West Division.

Following a first quarter that saw Salisbury jump out to an 18-6 lead, the Falcons held a double-digit advantage for virtually all of the remaining three quarters in downing Wilson, 59-33 on Thursday at Salisbury High School.

"We know that even though these teams were easier, we can feel the team coming together and finally clicking since last year," Holly Szita said. "I think we're definitely improving. Our teamwork together has improved as well each game."

"We didn't play well against Northern Lehigh," head coach Joe Mladosich said. "But today they played better. We shot better and had a lot of confidence."

With a number of players receiving valuable rest in preparation for the upcoming slate of conference games, the door was left open for a number of others to shine.

Szita, who finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists, was just one Falcon who impressed against the Warriors. Not only did she tally a season-high in points, the senior forward also had a hand in six other Falcon field goals with her passing.

"I felt like I was getting back in the groove of last year," Szita said. "Since I played in the offseason, I feel like it's all coming back."

"I think Holly played the best game I've seen her play," Mladosich said. "She played very well."

The Falcons opened up the final quarter with a 47-23 lead. After Salisbury began the fourth with a field goal, Szita found a cutting Kristen Bucchin for a basket with 6:22 remaining. Bucchin hit the free throw to secure the three-point play and make it a 52-23 game.

Not even a minute later, Szita set up Sydney Utesch for a layup, followed by a pass to Bucchin on the left block to make it 56-23 with five minutes to play.

"Normally the defense will naturally collapse on the top player, so normally that pass is open," Szita said.

"She [Szita] is tall enough to get the ball inside to Meagan [Eripret]," Mladosich said. "She did a good job. She rebounded very well, played good defense, and got out on the wing very well."

Eripret (who led all scorers with 16 points) and Lindsay Bauer combined for 19 in the first half in leading Salisbury to a 33-13 advantage at the break. Bauer, who made all five of her field goals, recorded 12 points in the win.

Following a jumper by Gaby Vega early in the second quarter that brought Wilson to within 18-9, the Falcons closed the quarter on a 15-4 run.

Kelly Gonoude finished with 10 points, five assists and five steals.

Ally Quinn hit three 3-pointers in the second half and paced the Warriors with 11 points. Vega finished with 10 for Wilson, eight of which came in the first half.
