Big fourth quarter pushes Hornets to win
The Emmaus boys basketball team was having a tough time with Stroudsburg.
The two teams traded leads 15 different times over the course of the first three quarters before a dominating 32-point fourth quarter propelled the Green Hornets to a 68-50 win over the Mounties last Tuesday night at Emmaus High School.
It was the fourth game in five days for Emmaus, and the Hornets went 3-1 in that span.
Joey Polcynski opened up the scoring with a dunk in transition and the Green Hornets looked to be starting off fast, but Stroudsburg answered every basket with one of its own.
Polcynski is seen as one of the go-to scorers this year, and he has accepted that role.
"We lost two senior leaders last year that did a lot of our scoring," Polcysnki said about Nate Feiertag and Joey Nicolini. "I'm just trying to be a guy to step up and be a leader. I want to embrace the role and help my team win."
Each team held two separate leads of only as much as three through the first two and a half quarters, and the Mounties went into the final frame with a one-point advantage. But that was the last time they held a lead.
Stroudsburg's Daniel Cuevas was a force down low, and could not be stopped in the first half, tallying 16 of his team-high 20 points. He was held in check during the second half, as Emmaus made the proper adjustments.
"In the first half we had a tough time covering him," said Polcynski. "But in the second half we doubled down on him more, and he didn't get as many shots off."
The Green Hornets then went off in the fourth. Polcynski (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Tyler Prescott (14 points) combined to score 17 points in a 32-point quarter, as they were able to pull away from Stroudsburg.
"I think it was our communication and our hard work," said Polcynski of that big fourth quarter. "We wanted to win at home and take care of business here. We hope that this energy and momentum can help us keep moving forward."
David Kachelries (10 points) also finished with double figures for Emmaus.
