Sports winners, artists honored at board meeting

This evening was Northwestern Lehigh High School's turn to have artwork displayed in the board of directors meeting room.

That was followed by honoring three sports teams that have done well during the season.

The Nov. 19 board meeting took place in the Northwestern Elementary School's gym.

Clare Coupe Scott, of the Northwestern Lehigh Educational Foundation, told the board about the activities of that group.

She said mini-grants for teachers began six years ago with $2,000 and this year the amount is $11,000. A grant can be from $100 to $1,500.

The foundation received the third highest amount of money, $112,000, in the state for Educational Improvement Tax Credit funds.

Scott said all fifth graders will receive Chromebooks this year with foundation funding.

Four fundraisers are held each year. DJ Wolbert, in charge of fund-raising, said they are an Applebee's breakfast, 5K run, golf tournament and sporting clays.

Major business sponsors are New Tripoli and Susquehanna banks and Waste Management.

The goal is funding for items not in the school district budget. Most grants are technology related.

There are 14 board members with one vacancy at this time.

Residents donating to United Way are asked to designate the foundation as the recipient. Superintendent Dr. Mary Anne Wright said the school has received thousands of dollars and she thanks the foundation.

Sixteen high school students under the tutelage of Kathy Kehs have their artwork on display. They are in the 3D Design category: Alyssa Rodda, plaster craft owl; Lydia Harrington, paper, repetitive cell wall; and Caitlyn Ziemniak, paper, repetitive cell wall.

In the drawing and painting category: Kila Gensits, self portrait; Jaclyn Hardcastle, self portrait; Autumn Stanley, self-portrait; Emily Renner, deep space; Journey Tretter, deep space; Mackenzie Rabert, dandelion; Kristen Post, sunflowers; Hannah Herzon, still life, Devon Nothstein, sunflowers; and Morgan Moss, landscape.

In the drawing and painting studio category: Sydney Davis, Lady and the Tramp on stretched canvas; Alyssa Majewski, courage/dog on stretched canvas; and Rosey Pergosky, underwater scene.

Board member Darryl Schafer said, "We go out of our way to have the art displayed. It looks professional."

Wright said to the audience, "We enjoy having you as we recognize your children," before she turned the program over to Activities Director Jason Zimmerman who recognized the three sports teams.

There was a talk by Food Director Lori Seier about consideration of removing the school lunch program off the National School Lunch programbecause of a decline in meals served and a la carte sales. Portion sizes would be increased. There would be less stress on whole grains.

Seier expects a la carte to increase if that happens. There will be a decision at the January board meeting.

Schafer said a policy is being created to present diplomas to veterans who did not graduate. Board members who are veterans include Phil Toll, Air Force; Ron Morrison, Marines; Darryl Schafer, Army; Joe Reiter, Army and Bill Dellicker, both Air Force and Navy.

The Makers group is becoming district sponsored as a formal club. It has 45 members who enjoy exploring new ideas.

Board member LeRoy Sorensen asked what happened to the metal and wood shops. Wright said they are taught at LCTI.

Board member Bill Dellicker said Joint Operating Committee membership is determined by the number of students enrolled in LCTI. There will be no change for the representation on the coming year's committee.

Lehigh Carbon Community College received a donation of $1.57 million. Of that, $75,000 will go for scholarships.

Community education classes begin in January 2015. Included are strength and endurance, basketweaving, yoga and Zumba.
