Four generations of Green family gather to celebrate 34th Thanksgiving together

Four generations of descendants of the late Stella Irene Green gathered for their 34th annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Aquashicola Fire Hall, in Carbon County.

The Green family, who originally lived in Slatington before moving to Germansville, began renting a hall for family Thanksgiving dinners after Eunice (Green) Smith had a dream of renting a hall and told her mother about it.

"The first year we had our Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family, it was held at the Knights of Columbus in Palmerton," said Ann Louise (Green) Loy. "The second year, we gathered at the Little Gap Grange.

"As the family grew and grew, we rented the Aquashicola Fire Hall."

Diane (Green) Schlauch of Germansville said the family began renting the Aquashicola Fire Hall years ago because her brother, Sherwood, lives near Palmerton and her sister, Colleen, worked for a bank in Palmerton.

"We all bring a food item to share with the family," Schlauch said. "Originally the first generation brought everything. The second generation brought dessert and the third generation brought the appetizers."

Schlauch said since last year, the second generation brings all the food and the first generation brings the dessert.

The third generation still brings the appetizers.

Seventy-one family members attended this year's Thanksgiving gathering at the fire hall to reminisce and dine on turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables, rolls and, of course, an assortments of desserts.
