Boy hoops team is winning games by large margins

The Salisbury boys basketball team has not yet found an opponent that could stay with the Falcons for four quarters.

During the first week of the regular season, the Falcons are 3-0 after wins over Blue Mountain (61-47) and Pen Argyl (67-30) by double digits. They finished off the week with a 71-46 victory at defending Colonial League and District 11 Class AA runner up Catasauqua.

For a majority of the contest Salisbury held a lead in double figures, but the Roughies made the Falcons work to close out the game. Catty brought the deficit to 49-41 with a little over six minutes remaining, but big fourth quarters from Dasheen Reid (25 points) and Tevon Weber (18 points) allowed Salisbury to increase its lead and keep its undefeated record.

For a team that lost its starting five to graduation, winning a lot of games early can only help with confidence moving forward.

"It means a lot to come out and win these games early," said Reid. "We all know how to play basketball and have been playing since we were young. We know what to do and have a lot of guys that can step up and fit in with the team."

There are three seniors on this year's squad, and each one contributed to the win. Along with Reid, Bryce Fairclough tallied eight points and six rebounds, and Brendan Reichenbach added three points along with two assists and two rebounds for the Falcons.

For most of the 2014-15 team, it is their first time getting valuable varsity minutes. Seven different Falcons found the scoresheet, including Dylan Belletiere (9 points, 5 rebounds), Chad Cooperman (5 points), and Derek Brown (3 points).

Reid led the charge with Salisbury keeping a double digit lead from the first quarter on. But it wasn't just about putting points on the board and showcasing to their coach what they could do offensively, these Falcons hustled for steals and rebounds on the defensive side of the ball, and that carries them on offense.

"I've worked a lot on my defense," said Reid, who had two steals on the night. "That's a big thing with coach [Jason Weaver]. He's really pressuring us to defend well because scoring comes with playing good defense. If I can play good defensively and score, my teammates will follow."

Salisbury will take on Northern Lehigh and Wilson this week before a break from Colonial League action for the holiday.
