Exchange Club recognizes youths of the month

"Outstanding" was one word heard throughout the Nov. 5 Northampton Exchange Club dinner held at the Northampton Memorial Community Center.

During the evening, four Northampton Area High School seniors were recognized as Youths of the Month, the first program for the 2014-15 school year.

Students recognized include Erika Veiszlemlein, September Girl of the Month; Travis Weghofer, September Boy of the Month; Jolene Steams, October Girl of the Month; and Evan Chuss, October Boy of the Month.

Dr. Rodger Berg, program chairman, said the recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and out-of-school endeavors.

"Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding," Berg said of the four seniors.

He said in addition to talent, other traits have helped the students succeed.

"Dedication, a positive attitude are other traits needed," he said. "And you need motivation."

Erika Veiszlemlein, September Girl of the Month, is a member of National Honor Society, captain of the Debate Club, served as president and vice president of the orchestra, first reginal winner in Distributive Education Clubs of America, first regional winner in Future Business Leaders of America, and member of the Scholastic Scrimmage, Chess Club; Mock Trial and high school scholar program.

Travis Weghofer, September Boy of the Month, is a member of National Honor Society; an orchestra concert master and president, and member of the Debate Club, Stage Crew, Chess Club, German Club, GAAP Exchange and high school scholar program.

Jolene Steams, October Girl of the Month, is a member of National Honor Society; captain of the girls tennis team, and member of the French Club and Miracle League Trick or Treat.

Evan Chuss, October Boy of the Month, is a member of National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, a national competitor in Distributive Education Clubs of America and Debate Team. He is an Eagle Scout and senior patrol leader.
