Salisbury Township Police Chief Allen W. Stiles is asking residents for their assistance.
"Snowstorms will leave many of the fire hydrants covered or partially covered in Salisbury Township (and probably most of the municipalies in the Lehigh Valley)," Stiles said. "Some winters bring lighter snow falls and our public works department and our volunteer fire fighters have had time to clear the snow from around the fire hydrants. This year may be different.
"Our public works department has its hands full just clearing our roadways and our volunteers are busy responding to help our residents during emergencies. We are requesting the assistance of our residents.
"Find that buried fire hydrant in your neighborhood (the marker should be visible above the snow). Grab that shovel or start up that snow blower and spend 10 minutes digging out that fire hydrant. We need quick access to a water source. Help your firefighters and police officers to help you.
"Public safety is everyone's responsibility."
