Speed limit change mulled for 33rd, Lindberg

Salisbury Township is considering a proposal to reduce the speed limit to 25 mph on two major thoroughfares: 33rd Street and Lindberg Avenue.

"We have done our traffic studies," Salisbury Township Chief of Police Allen W. Stiles told commissioners at the Nov. 13 meeting when he made the proposal.

Two different speed limits are posted on 33rd Street's relatively short distance between Lehigh Street and Emmaus Avenue.

"A small section is posted 35 mph. Another is 25 mph. It's not fair to motorists," Stiles said.

The speed limit along Lindberg would be reduced to 25 mph between 24th Street and South Cedar Crest Boulevard.

''The second [speed reduction along Lindberg Avenue] will play well into the Lindberg Site Plan," Stiles said.

The Lindberg Park Master Plan calls for traffic-calming measures and bicycle lanes for Lindberg Avenue.

There have been complaints about speeding on Lindberg. More homes have been built in the vicinity during the past decade.

"The park's being more heavily used," Stiles noted.

Cars are being parked along Lindberg by those using the park. "We can't take away parking because there's no place to go," Stiles said.

Some of those who park their vehicles are at risk when crossing Lindberg Avenue to the park.

As a First Class Township, Salisbury is permitted to lower speed limits.

At the Oct. 23 township meeting, Stiles said Officer Bryan Losagio observed traffic on two days on Green Acres Drive and South Ott Street.

"We really didn't have any issues," Stiles said.

Commissioner Joanne Ackerman, who raised concerns at the Oct. 9 township meeting about traffic in the Green Acres area where she lives, said, "We've noticed there's been a big difference.

"I want to thank you for that," Ackerman said to Stiles.

Stiles said the department conducted a six-day traffic study on South Dauphin Street after receiving complaints.

The speed limit is 25 mph. The average speed was 14.4 mph, the average number of vehicles per day was 279 and the total was 1,378 over six days.
