NASD approves $10,000 for Northampton school plays
A new account has been created for the production of theater at Northampton Area High School.
There is now a fall play activity account and a spring musical activity account.
Northampton Area School Board, on the recommendation of the NASD administration, by a 9-0 vote at the Oct. 27 meeting, approved the transfer of $5,000 from the drama club account into each of the new accounts for a total of $10,000.
"The majority of the money for the shows is money students raise," district Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik told The Press after the Oct. 27 meeting. Kovalchik also noted that parents and advisors volunteer to produce the plays.
In other business, the Northampton Area School District School Board, on recommendation of the NASD administration, by a 9-0 vote at the Oct. 27 meeting approved:
Zachary Winter, long-term substitute elementary teacher at Moore Elementary School, effective retroactive to Oct. 20 through on or about March 24, 2015, at a salary of $46,050, pro-rated, without benefits;
Jill Hudish, long-term substitute elementary teacher at Siegfried Elementary School, effective on or about Nov. 20, through on or about April 23, 2015, at a salary of $46,050.00, pro-rated, without benefits; and
Michael Bauer, 7-12 language arts department coordinator, effective for the 2014-15 school year, at a stipend of $2,082.
Also approved were:
Additions to the substitute listing for the 2014-15 school year;
Additions to the NASD Volunteer Master Listing for the 2014-15 school year: Melissa Czarnecki, Lehigh Elementary School, and Gary Pierzga, Borough Elementary School;
Bargaining Agreement between NASD and Northampton Area Educators Association;
Anita Mateyak, advisor of the Northampton Future Business Leaders of America Club, to accompany two FBLA student members to the Pennsylvania FBLA Leadership Workshop, Nov. 2 and 3, State College, at a cost to not exceed $270, which is in the 2014-15 curriculum budget;
A 60-month lease with Fraser Advanced Information Systems to replace the copier in the special education office in the administrative office with a Sharp Model MX-6240N at $456 per month; and
Accept with appreciation the donation of school supplies from RCN at an approximate value of $300.
The following resignations were approved by the school board, on recommendation of the NASD administration, at the Oct. 27 meeting as well:
Linda Keller, special education teacher, for retirement, effective June 2, 2015, or the last teacher day of the 2014-15 school year; and
Stephanie Makhoul, short term substitute and day-to-day substitute, effective Oct. 31.
The following leave of absences were approved, on recommendation of the NASD administration, also:
Jessica Boandl, a paid childbearing leave of absence beginning on or about March 4, 2015, through April 22, 2015, and an unpaid FMLA childrearing leave, with benefits, beginning on or about April 23, 2015, through the end of the 2014-15 school year; and
Lee Strohl, an extension to his unpaid leave of absence, with benefits, beginning Oct. 1 through Nov. 11.
