Lower Macungie column

Lower Macungie Library will feature the artwork of Luther Henninger who paints rural scenery.

The library will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 4 .m. Nov. 22 to celebrate the library's new logo and website. There will be refreshments, giveaways and the fall book sale. Demonstrations of the library website will be given 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The library will be closed Nov. 27 and 28 in observance of Thanksgiving.

The Lower Macungie Library will sponsor a bus trip to the Costumes of Downton Abbey and Yuletide Tour at Winterthur Dec. 14. The visit includes an open air tram tour of the garden and the costume exhibit. To register for this event, contact the library at 610-966-6864.

The library book club will meet 10:30 a.m. Dec. 10 for a holiday cookie exchange and readings.

The library will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 and will close 2 p.m. Dec. 31.

Preschool storytimes are ongoing. School age programs are held Monday evenings. Check the library for the schedule.

Adult computer classes including Microsoft Word, Excel, Intro to the Web and social networking are offered monthly. The schedule is available at the library.

The Friends of the Lower Macungie Library book sale will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 22. The bag sale begins 2:30 p.m. Nov. 22. Member preview night will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20. Membership forms are available. Memberships purchased that evening will be good throughout 2015 which includes two more book sales. All proceeds benefit the library.

There will be no Friends of the Lower Macungie Library meeting in December. The next meeting will be 10 a.m. Jan. 17, 2015, in the library.

Curbside leaf collection will continue through Nov. 28, weather permitting.

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the ninth annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won't be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon. Saturdays through Nov. 28. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last eight years 720 boxes of donated items have been sent to 93 soldiers.

The township is also collecting old cell phones to be recycled in exchange for prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas. The community center is an official drop-off point for "Cell Phones for Soldiers."

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center will collect new children's pajamas infant through size 18 and new books to donate to local children's shelters. Teenage sizes are especially needed. Donations can be dropped off through Dec. 15 in a drop-off bin in the lobby.

The annual craft and vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit the Lower Macungie Community Center 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 7. John Pittman Photography will be available to take pictures with Santa.

The Lower Macungie Township Historical Society will hold "Christmas at the Log House" 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 13. There will be an open house at the historic Bortz log house at the Wescosville recreation area on Route 222. The house will be decorated for Christmas in period fashion and lighted by candles. All are welcome.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Dec. 2 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center offers a number of activities including Walkercise, yoga, pilates and Zumba. Some classes are held at the Wescosville Recreation Center and the Hills at Lockridge Community Center. For more information, contact the Lower Macungie Community Center at 610-966-6924.

Yard waste site winter hours will be noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The site is closed on Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show your photo identification as proof of residency.
