Township seeks to hire custodian

Salisbury Township is looking to hire a custodian for the township municipal complex, which includes the administration, public works and police department buildings.

Commissioners voted 4 - 0, with one commissioner absent Nov. 6, to approve the custodian job description and advertise and recruit for the custodian position.

Even before the job was approved, township officials said they were getting inquiries about it. The night of the vote, a woman in the audience expressed interest in the job.

The three-page job description stipulates $20 to $22 per hour for the non-exempt full-time job, with health benefits.

The custodian will be supervised by the township manager and police chief.

Duties include routine maintenance, including minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, patching walls, tile work and painting.

Also: maintain cleaning supplies; emptying waste receptacles; sweep, vacuum, mop and buff floors, carpeting and floor mats; clean restrooms, locker rooms and showers; clean and disinfect police station cells; change light bulbs; and remove snow and leaf debris at entrances, among other duties.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. Experience in the custodial field is preferred.

There is detailed information about working conditions.

Commissioner Joanne Ackerman asked if there would be a probationary period for the person hired.

Township Manager Randy Soriano said typically there is a six-month probation period.

Salisbury Police Chief Allen W. Stiles has said anyone applying for a custodian position would undergo a background check and be fingerprinted.

Commissioners discussed the buildings' custodian position, which has been spun off from a public works department position, during the Oct. 9 meeting workshop.
