Union United Church of Christ honors beloved Pastor Thomas

The Rev. Thomas N. Thomas has retired from Union United Church of Christ where he served as senior pastor for 30 years.

Seven months of special activities in his honor culminated Oct. 26 with Thomas' recognition as pastor emeritus.

Events that Sunday included a message from the Rev. Alan Miller of the UCC Penn Northeast Conference, presentation of gifts and remarks from staff and church leaders, and a grand celebration and picnic in the church grove.

While Thomas could sit back and listen to other speakers on his last Sunday at Union UCC, he preached his final sermon the week before.

"For 30 years we have journeyed together as God's people. We have not stood still. People during that time have changed. There have been joys and challenges, Thomas said.

"It has been an unforgettable ministry. I know you will continue to serve God with great responsibility and joy in the community."

Miller described Thomas as a generous, nurturing person with phenomenal humility who treats all people as equals without regard to their position in life.

He mentioned Thomas' great skill at gardening.

"Tom is a master at planting, nurturing, and watching seeds grow," Miller said.

To continue Thomas' legacy at the church, Miller advised members, "Keep tending this garden as well as Tom did."

Assistant Pastor Kris Snyder-Samuelson re-called she was impressed by Thomas through phone conversations before she ever met him and was hired for the job.

She commended his thoughtfulness, strong faith in God and love for the church.

Church leader David Fleming used a Biblical quote for his compliment of Thomas.

"Well done, good and faithful servant," said Fleming.

Consistory President Carrington Smith also praised Thomas.

"Over these years, you have been our shepherd," Smith said.

He praised Thomas for his calm demeanor and acceptance of diversity of thought.

Smith read the resolution presenting the title "pastor emeritus" to Thomas.

"Rev. Thomas, Union United Church of Christ would like to honor you today for the many years of service here," Smith said. "You have been a distinguished leader. Our congregation has grown in faith and has dramatically increased our mission and outreach because of your challenging ministry.

"The life of our church is richer and fuller because we had you living and working among us."

Fleming explained the meaning of the pastor emeritus designation.

"The conferring of this honor is a way of recognizing your distinguished service and also saying we love you. You are indeed our beloved former pastor," Fleming said. "It is a visible and symbolic way of declaring to you, to the community, and to the denomination this church's esteem and honor."

A standing ovation followed Thomas' recognition as pastor emeritus.
