LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Letter to the editor

To the editor:

You can't help the snow but you can help your letter carrier deliver your mail by creating a safe, clear path to your mailbox this winter.

Make sure snowdrifts or trash containers don't create obstacles. Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, steps and overhangs before your carrier comes with the mail. Your letter carrier and local post office will thank you every step of the way!

Letter carriers are instructed to hold mail to addresses where ice and snow have not been cleared. They cannot make door or curb deliveries when the approach to the mailbox is hazardous because of snow or ice. Carriers are not allowed to attempt door delivery when there is a heavy buildup of snow and ice on sidewalks, steps or porches. Walkways and stairs should be cleared of snow and ice and allow enough traction to avoid slips, trips or falls.

Customers are asked to clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box, deliver the mail and drive away from the box without danger or the need for backing. The carriers are not allowed to dismount for curbline boxes blocked by snow and ice buildup. Snow must by cleared to the curbline for at least 6 feet on both sides of the mailbox so the carrier may approach and leave without backing up.

Please help your mail carrier provide the best service they can as safely as possible.
