Krumsville author, animal lover writes books on horses and dogs

Author Dodie Sable of Krumsville has a second book in publication.

Sable's writing career began at a young age when she wrote articles and short stories.

As she became an endurance horseback rider, a change from showing, Sable discovered she had many stories to share on the web.

Readers told Sable how much they enjoyed her stories and said she should have them published.

Finally, she gathered enough of her stories about trips to endurance ride sites and the rides to create a book.

"To Finish is to Win: One Woman's Riding Misadventures," is the title of the book.

The draft was sent to five publishers, from whom Sable expected five rejections.

However, to her surprise, she received not one, but two, acceptances.

Her choice was Tate Publishing because, with the acceptance, was a letter saying the books were "inspirational."

She describes the book as the culmination of her misadventures in endurance riding a ride for a set distance between 25 to 100 miles.

Endurance riding competition includes vet checks along the trail, and has a minimum and maximum time to complete the ride.

Sable has six horses and is a breeder of Appaloosas.

She endurance rode her stallion Shark for eight years.

After she got her first pony, horses became a disease for her. Sable said she needs an intervention because she is addicted.

At present, she has six horses. Two of them are babies, which she keeps at a friend's house.

The friend has spotted American Paint Horses so there is a colorful pasture with the Apps and Paints.

"I have a zoo here with three dogs, two cats, two parrots, two guinea pigs, two corn snakes, a tank of fancy goldfish and a ferret," Sable said. "They all have the run of the house." Sable said, adding she has a pear tree but no partridge.

The menagerie consists of Patches, a blue-fronted Amazon parrot raised from a baby.

Six feet away is a cage for a Blue and Gold Macaw that came to her without feathers, except on the head. The macaw had been stressed in its previous home and plucked its feathers out.

The two know which area is theirs and usually siton top of the cages instead of inside.

Cinnamon, the ferret, has the run of the house and goes outside on a lease. The female guinea pig, Sable found when it was crossing the road.

The owner was located but Sable was told she could keep the guinea pig.

She already had a male, so it did not take long for the babies to come. There are three at present.

The dogs are Max, a rescued Mountain Cur; Roo, an Australian Shepherd; and Pixie, a miniature poodle, who is her constant companion.

Although the horse business began in 1988, grooming was not part of her life until 2006 when the economy started falling apart.

She and her husband, Marc, operate an animal grooming business.

This led to her second book, "A Day in the Life of … More Amazing Misadventures."

These stories are about the animals she meets during her work, but her favorite is about one of the owners, George.

Sable said George taught her humility. One of George's dogs died so he got another.

George was looking forward to Sable's visit but he died and his dog followed him shortly thereafter.

"Get the books if you want a laugh," Sable said. "People ask how I know they are funny. I tell them, 'If you don't laugh at least once, I'll give you double the price.'"

Sable is now working on her third book, "Murphy's Law: Follow the Rules."

The books are available at Firefly Book Store, Kutztown, which has an eclectic collection of books; and Amazon.com.

The second book will also be available at Barnes and Noble in the Lehigh Valley Mall beginning in December.

The books have sold well among the people who know her, whether from the area where she lives or on the trails where she rides.
