Emmaus High School announces National Merit Semifinalists

Seven Emmaus High School seniors are among semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.

In alphabetical order, Emmaus High School seniors named semifinalists are Ryan D. Bilger, son of Kurt and Catherine Bilger, of Macungie; Keegan G. Daugherty, daughter of Mark and Alison Daugherty, of Emmaus; Daniel Intriago, son of Eddie A. and Gladys Intriago, of Macungie; Lucy Q. Lin, daughter of Dr. Guoying Eric Lin and Yan Xu, of Macungie; Ellen Park, daughter of Chul Hee and Jawon Park, of Macungie; Mason A. Trinkle, son of Jim and Kimberly Trinkle, of Emmaus and Justine Wang, daughter of Liuji Wang and Lucy Wen, of Macungie.

Bilger is captain and president of the academic team, president of the German club and has participated in the orchestra from ninth through 12th grade. He is a senior patrol leader of Boy Scout Troop 71 and Troop historian and enjoys recreational soccer. He plans to major in history and political science.

Daugherty is a member of the French National Honor Society, has been a member of the robotics team, art club, National Honor Society, a volunteer for Lincoln Elementary School, volunteer at the Good Shepherd Rehab Hospital, ConKerr cancer volunteer and a volunteer at the DaVinci Science Center. She plans to major in molecular biology.

Intriago serves as secretary of FBLA, art club secretary and president, president of Mountains of Hope, vice-president of National Honor Society, vice president of the breakdance club and a member of the interact club. He also participated in the orchestra from ninth through 12th grade. He plans to major in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware.

Lin has participated in the PA Math League and the academic team and has served as treasurer of Habitat for Humanity, treasurer of the French club and a member of FBLA. Her other extracurricular activities include piano, violin, dance and library volunteer. She plans to major in engineering.

Park serves as secretary for Habitat for Humanity, plays in the pit orchestra, the chamber orchestra and is a member of FBLA. Her activities out of school include volunteering for the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, second chair violinist for the Young People's Philharmonic and PMEA district and regional orchestra. She plans to study biology/pre-veterinary studies.

Trinkle serves as captain of the varsity cross country team, serves as a Hornet Ambassador, president of the hiking club, secretary of Kid-to-Kid, vice president of the drama department, member of No Place for Hate, vice president of Tri-M, president of the chorale, member of the select choir, member of the French club, National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. He serves on the board of the 1803 House of Emmaus and is a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospice. He is undecided on his major of study.

Wang has been a member of Habitat for Humanity, the orchestra, Sinfonia Orchestra, varsity academic team, Future Business Leaders of America, club vice president of International Justice Mission, doubles varsity girls tennis athlete and a speaker for the varsity debate team. Her out-of-school activities include co-leading her church youth group, tutoring at JEI Learning Center, volunteering at Lower Macungie Library, playing piano, volunteering at Lehigh Valley Hospital and working as a cashier at Weis. She plans to major in nursing at the University of Pittsburgh.
