Two Lynn Township women die in crash

Two Lynn Township women were killed when their cars collided head-on around 6:17 p.m. Oct. 21 at 7955 Kings Highway, Lynn Township, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.

Amy L. Mende, 60, of 8951 Slateville Road, Kempton, was pronounced dead 7:20 p.m. at the scene by Lehigh County First Deputy Coroner Eric Minnich, Grim said.

Sylvia Koenig, 71, of 7493 Ontelaunee Road, New Tripoli, was also pronounced dead by Minnich at 7:21 p.m.

The cause of death for both women was multiple blunt force injuries, Grim said.

He ruled the manner of their deaths an accident.

According to State Police Troop M Fogels-ville, Mende was driving a 1996 Volvo S60. Koenig was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion.

The two women, whom Grim said were wearing seat belts, were extricated from their vehicles by New Tripoli and Kempton volunteer firefighters, police say.

Koenig, a 1961 graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School, was retired from the school district.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.
