Playground awarded grant

The playground within Kutztown Park will receive a $150,000 state grant, thanks to impact fees collected from drilling in the Marcellus Shale, said state Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, who announced the funding Oct. 21.

The grant was awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority and is part of the authority's Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program, funded from impact fees paid by drilling companies in the Marcellus Shale.

"The playground in Kutztown Park is in need of serious repairs, and I'm pleased this grant program exists to make this playground safer for our children," Day said. "This is the borough's only playground, and it would be a shame to lose this valuable recreational area for our children.

"I'm pleased to see this grant will not only fund repairs but make the play area more accessible to children with special needs."

The existing playground has exceeded its lifespan and must be replaced to eliminate safety concerns and to provide full accessibility.

The new equipment will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and meet federal safety standards.

The project will also include new walkways, plaza space, playground equipment and natural elements to include stepping stones, logs and native plants.
