Gatekeepers rep gives presentation to supervisors

Amy Angelo, representing the Gatekeepers program of the United Way, attended the Washington Township supervisors Oct. 7 meeting.

Angelo told the board the program teaches friends, family, neighbors and others how to recognize when senior citizens may need help and to anonymously report it.

Training is offered for business employees, such as utility workers, bank tellers, delivery drivers, mail and newspaper carriers and grocery store clerks - anyone who comes in contact with older people.

As part of the training, those attending the program are given an anonymous, untraceable ID number to be used when making a referral.

The Area Agency on Aging follows up on each referral and then the person, if in need, will be connected to appropriate services.

United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley has set up a fund to provide aid, if needed.

The program covers Lehigh and Northampton counties.

For information, contact Angelo at 610-435-1541 ext. 302 or aangelo@allentowndiocese.org.

In other business, Emerald Fire Chief Keith Kibler asked supervisors when Old Mill Bridge will have the 4-ton weight restrictions lifted and when it would be replaced.

Supervisor Josh Friebolin said the township is looking at ways to pay for the work.

"We want to fix it as soon as possible," Friebolin said.

Kevin Smith had two plots of land, one for 36.197 acres; the other for 12.487 acres to add to the Ag Security Area on the Smith Farm on Old Post Road. The inclusion was approved by the board.

Two school bus stop signs, requested by Northern Lehigh School District, will be placed at 7933 and 7944 Furnace Road.

The Slatedale Athletic Association sent a letter to supervisors thanking the work crew for its help emptying garbage, keeping the grass mowed and in general going out of its way to be helpful.

The diesel and gas bid, which was awarded last month, has been changed to Lehigh Fuel.

Trick or Treat Night will take place 6-8 p.m. Oct. 29, the same time as Slatington.

Resident Ed Ziegler asked who did the landscaping around the municipal building and said it looked good.

The road crew does the work. The compliment will be passed on to them.
