Emmaus Police Department
Beginning in late October through Aug. 30, 2015, the Emmaus Police Department will participate in a statewide enforcement, awareness and educational effort targeting aggressive driving.
The Emmaus Police Department has been approved for grant funding by the North Central Highway Safety Network.
Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project will open the 2014-2015 grant year with an enforcement wave scheduled Oct. 26 to Nov. 22.
More than 349 municipal police agencies and the Pennsylvania State Police will work to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries and deaths on 474 roadways throughout the state.
The focus for the 4-week enforcement wave will be driving on the right side of the roadway. Law enforcement agencies will be attentive to motorists exhibiting other unsafe driving behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, careless driving, running red lights and other aggressive driving actions.
Officers from the Emmaus Police Department will use traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, multi-agency enforcement efforts and driving while imbibing or intoxicated patrols to identify and cite aggressive and intoxicated drivers.
Aggressive driving is a combination of unsafe and unlawful driving actions, which demonstrate a conscious and willful disregard for safety. Emmaus Police Department traffic details will include such offenses as speeding, tailgating, making unsafe lane changes, running red lights and stop signs, passing improperly and failing to yield the right of way.
In addition to the aggressive driving enforce- ment and educational initiatives, officers with the Emmaus Police Department will also be enforcing the use of seat belts and child safety seats. The use of seat belts has a significant effect in reducing the number of deaths and the severity of injuries resulting from traffic crashes.
