ACC can't slow down Davidson

Senior running back Andrew Davidson always wants the ball in his hands. He has been relentless in his rushing attack all season, but he took it to another level last Saturday night.

With teh team already missing senior running back Wyl Miller for the remainder of the season, Davidson's complimentary tailback Kyle Boney was also limited in the game because of injury, but the Emmaus run game did not skip a beat.

Davidson carried the ball 39 times for 318 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Green Hornets (4-3 overall, 3-3 Southern division) to a 31-28 victory at J Birney Crum stadium. He could have added a fifth score, but slid down at the 3-yard line to let the clock expire.

"He's a gamer," head coach Randy Cuthbert said. "He's a great player. Boney did a great job, but he had a little ankle thing this week. He was effective at the beginning, but in the second half it really tightened up on him."

While Boney did his best to play through the nagging injury, it was up to Davidson to help move the ball and put points on the board.

He never seemed to tire while running through Central Catholic (1-6, 0-6). He carried the ball 18 times for 98 yards in the fourth quarter alone as Emmaus kept possession for all but 59 seconds.

"We just had to stay together, and everyone had to do what they're supposed to," Davidson said. "I don't want to say it's as simple as that, but when everyone on the field is doing their job, it makes it easy. The offensive line played great tonight."

With its second straight victory, Emmaus stayed in the hunt for a District 2-4-11 Class 4A subregional playoff berth. It is the longest win streak of the season so far for the Green Hornets.

"It's huge," said Davidson. "We still have playoff hopes, and we're still looking forward. We just have to go week-by-week, and if we do that, we'll find ourselves in the running for it at the end."

It did not come easy, however, for Emmaus. Two consecutive turnovers in the third quarter gave the Vikings some momentum, and the lead.

Central Catholic grabbed a 28-21 lead in the third quarter, converting two turnovers into touchdowns. Brad Nelson gave the Vikings their first and only lead when he returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown with 6:02 to go in the third.

The Green Hornets again came right back, with Davidson leaping into the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown run with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

Emmaus will now look to keep it rolling, with a home matchup against Pocono Mountain East on Friday night.
