Trojans hand Emmaus first loss of season

After Emmaus picked up a 1-0 win in a very physical contest in its first meeting with Parkland, one might have expected much of the same in the rematch. However, Emmaus came out flat and wound up on the zero side of a 1-0 overtime loss. With just 1:37 remaining in overtime, Byron Derti fired a shot that roared past EHS goalie Ethan Lang for the winning goal.

Emmaus players wanted a foul called on the play, but the referees didn't comply, giving the Hornets their first loss of the season. It ended a streak of nine straight shutouts for Emmaus, dating back to September 11.

"It started with warm-ups," said Emmaus head coach John Cari. "I didn't think we looked prepared to go today. I don't know if we got too comfortable or the different starting time. From the get-go, I don't think we were sharp and didn't have the intensity. We just didn't look great and that's how the result turns out then."

Like the first game, this battle did have its physical moments and both sides had issues with calls from the referees. Emmaus' Parker Landis received a yellow card just under 10 minutes into the game and Parkland's Ahmad Awadalla was warned by the officials for arguing, but, much to the dismay of the Emmaus players and coaches, wasn't given a yellow card.

Much of the game was played in Emmaus' end. Lang made 13 saves on the day, many coming on shots fired from close proximity. Parkland seemed patient and passed the ball well to cut through Emmaus defenders.

Emmaus had trouble sustaining any constant pressure on Parkland and goalkeeper Evan Bleiler, who made nine saves.

"I thought they did a decent job moving the ball," said Cari. "I don't think we were able to do a decent job and get the ball moving ourselves. We might have been a little dangerous in the early part of the game, but I don't think we did a lot of positive things. It's a tough loss and I think we just need to get refocused."

Entering the final week of the regular season, Emmaus (14-1-1 overall, 13-1-0 EPC) has clinched the Skyline Division of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, but with Stroudsburg at 11-2, hasn't clinched the top seed in the playoffs.

The Green Hornets close out their season this week with games against Whitehall (6-7-1, 5-6-1) and Central Catholic (6-10, 5-9) before heading into the conference playoffs that begin on Saturday.
